Upgrading PC, now have a problem

I install the mobo, CPU, HS and fan. Memory, video card and power supply. Hook everything else up and turn on the power. This is where the problem starts; The system doesn't start. The CPU Fan kicks about 1/4" then the entire system shuts down. Thinking I've burned a CPU, I look. No telltale sign of burned CPU. I double check all my connections, all secure. Checked the PSU, tests out on the PSU tester I have.

The mobo is an ECS K7S5A. Processor AMD XP 2400+. Video Card is a Radeon 9200 128MB 8x AGP. Knowing that I look up the ECS site, and the AGP bus is only 4x. I'm pretty sure 8x is backwards compatible with 4x. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.

Anyone know what else could be the problem?

have you tried turning it on without the gfx card in and only one stick of ram in? (oh and remove all other PCI cards, network cards etc...

do the case fans start up?

ummm...oh..yes all 8x agp gfx cards can run at 4x or even 2x.

sigh i usta be good at shit like this.... mebe check your conenctions again.

Check your connection to your harddrives. Thats a pretty familiar sounding problem. something vital is probly in the wrong palce or isnt plugged in as well as you thought. push your ribbon cable in and make sure there still in hte right place on hte board. And what exactly does it do when you start it. How far does it go.

ok didnt read that well enough. Did yo check the wall socket or the back of hte comp to make sure the power cord isnt looser thatn it seems. Ive had loose moniter conection that do that when there worn or being pulled too hard. they ALWAYS cut the power in an erie way and seem like its butsed ALWAYS. The never just go when ther being pulled.(IE the cord finally moves enough to loose connection for the power.)

IT has to do wiht the odd shape of hte power cords. And it will always do it when you turn it on or something and make you think it cant be being pulled too. Just means that your moving it more than you think or the cord is alot more tought than you would think. Its really easy for it to fool you.

So your not getting any beeps?

Well its doubtful its a loose card, or ide cables in wrong if it just powers right off. Still sounds like PS or CPU to me. Sometimes new PS's can be a pain and take alot of jiggling at the cord and on offs to kind of get them burned in some.

Got another CPU you can try? Clear CMOS? Put a different HSF on it?

It's a 400W Skyhawk Power Supply. Came free with the case. I have another Power supply lying around here (also 400W) and I'll give that a try.

Yeah, the computer doesn't even beep.

Make sure youre 12 volt plug is in securly, mine was doin this right when i put it together, i just haden't gotten the 12v pluged in all the way

Check your new power supply and make sure the voltage switch is set to 115. Well, it should be on 115 if you're in the states anyways.

The other thing to also check is whether your ps has a fuse or not. Mine has a a fuse on the back, just use a screw driver to twist open the holder and pull the fuse out. Use a multimeter to check for continuity.

Lastly, make sure the power supply is actually switching on. Look at the fans and see if they are spinning.

Hmm, I'm assuming you hooked up the power switch to the correct jumper on your board right?

If theres no beep then theres a probelm with the power suppy because the beep is the POST.

Just saying like if theres really old wall sockets that have the plaster behind them eroded and dont physically hold hte stuff in htem anymore. It be a simpler problem to deal with. Thats an easy thing to find out. And do yo have an ohm meter. If you do open your comp and test different spots as it comes on. Maybe youll find something out. Check form the atx connector on the mother board an work your way around the main parts. You might find somthing, but maybe not.(as an option to what daleon and someone said, not a replacement)

And when the cord are being pulled sideways and out alittle the rubber can be in deep in the case but the metal contact surface inside can be very close to nothing. You can have it so close to disconnected that the hard drive starting up can shut you down after a few revolutions or when it spins just right. (Im refeering to the power cord to the computer.) It did it alot on my old moniter after the socket for holding the rubber part had weakend on the moniter side(one of the replaceable cords that fit almost anything) and when the comp would start jiggling a little form the hard drive starting hte moniter would start flickering of and off and half the time just shut off. Making me have to push it back in or many times, for some reason, shut the comp off jiggle it and then restart for it to turn back on. (IE the fans could be doing it. Not saying they are but when you get pissed its a good thing to check to cool down. Fans, cool down, its a joke.
