New Information Superhighway

I don't know about your newspapers but it said in mine that American researchers are pissed off that the Internet has slowed down their serious research and they're building their own Information Superhighway. Apparently this is meant to be a heck of a lot faster, considering they do have around 100 million to help build it. I hope this doesn't take away the Internet we have now.

Okay I'll put in English. American researchers are fed up with the increasing popularity of the Internet. For some reason it slows down "serious" research. Porn, PlayBoy, etc. So now they've been given around 100 million to build a new Information SuperHighway.

Well, what kind of speed to they mean? If they are just talking about transmitting data then they are idiots because building a new one isn't going to make it any faster. If they mean faster to find what you want, well yeah. It's easier to find your way around in a town of 300 people than it is in a city of 300 billion.

I think he's talking about I2, but his back story is a little convoluted.

I'm not sure what you mean Nimbus... The Internet is faster then it ever was, but it certainly can be faster. If I recall correctly "I2" is currently just a ton of fiber stretching between two buildings and a pair of modified Juniper ERX-1440 40 Gb routers. I LOVE Juniper routers! They are huge, loud, and insanely difficult to manage... But they are amazing routers!

But if its just 2 buildings connected together, with no outside input or acces, its called an intranet or network right?

Ok, hte internet used to be small and it would be easier if htey have only there stuff or "less" stuff in order to find there own stuff.

Hell itll be like the old days. 8) Nothing but colleges and hospitals and people and people who knew how to properly stick there jack in the modem. Its a great idea if its to let all the people only involved in newer stuff stay on the old one and make a seperate set of lines for those who have the technical skill to get on it. Itll be paradise. aaahhhhh!!!!!

Nobody who doenst remember that 3.5 disks werent always called floppies. Er at all! Yea yea yea! and no one born before like '84. 8p

I read something about a few scientists who were sick of sending large files of their data to colleagues across the atlantic and taking forever. So they set up some fiber optics and had these huge ass routers/NICs. They would get like 10Gbs/sec from LA to Chicago then it would get a little bottlenecked and get about 5Gbs/sec to Switzerland or something. They showed a picture of one of the NICs and it was about as long as a midtower case and maybe 2/3s the height.

Well an "intranet" is an "internal network." So an external network would be "internet." So the internet is just a standard network that everyone hooks into.
