Client prediction and missed opportunities

Now this might just be me, since I don't have the fastest computer or anything, but have any other pilots noticed that when you are on somebody's tail and land the last couple shots that disable the enemy aircraft it kind of teleports forwards and down? When you get shot down the plane goes into a dive and says you've lost control, but what I think happens when you are shooting at someone and it disables them is that your computer doesn't register that they are entering a dive right away... When you get the packet back from the server updating they're location they are already way below your crosshairs, and a lot of times the pilot has time to bail from the aircraft before you can adjust and land the final bullet to blow the plane up. This is starting to piss me off because I have missed out on kills for a lot of Liberator crews due to what I think is a side effect of lag prediction. *sigh*

So anyways, has anyone else seen this happen, and do you think its something that could be fixed some day?

Just wait until Server-Side Hit-Detection is a reality. Not only will there be a lot of angry, defeated exploiters, but quaint problems like this will be the subject of jokes.

Yeah, I get that sometimes. My ping is:

Ping statistics for xxx.xx.xxx.xx:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 46ms, Average = 45ms

To solve that problem always target the lowest possible part of their vehicle as they reach death (use adv. targeting)

Is server side detection in the pipeline? Or are you dreaming?

Dreaming. I labor under the delusion that some day, internet gaming will be as fair and balanced as chess.

Misc Info

Server side would be sweet, but SOE would need 20 some T1 lines for each server i would guess. And they would need some huge opteron/itanium servers too, they comuting power needed for that would be huge

It's a bitter pill. All the might of the internet, and yet such a simple flaw.

Bill Gates has declared his intention for an all-console internet gaming environment for the future.

Perhaps that's how they'll make CSHD work. If they make it so any mod chips are instantly detected, they can exclude all modded consoles. It's not a perfect fix, but it's a lot better than the cheater-ridden environment that we have now.

The cheaters better hope there's no afterlife. They'll be playing "add the integers" on a Texas Instruments calclulator throughout eternity while the honest players travel into the eternal digital wonderland.
