Author Topic: Group/Squad Sizes
Qballzs Station Member Registered: Nov 2000 posted 01-23-2003 06:37 PM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Are the Squad sizes going to be a fairly large number? One of the thing's that seriously screwed over DAoC PvP was that the group was limited to 8 people, Then the Chat room size was limited to 50, Yet once the masses got out there you would usually have well over 50 players. Not being able to communicate sucks. I know there was something mentioned about combining squads temporarily, but how many squad will be able to be linked? It's 4 squads to a Platoon, 4 Platoons to a Battalion and 2 Battalions to a company. I think that's right (USMC boot was a long time ago and I got medically discarged about a week before completion, which sucked). But will you be able to have some kind of structure like this in game. It seem's to work really well. Squad member can talk amongs squad. Squad Leader can talk to squad members, and Platoon leader. Platoon can talk to Battalion, and squad leader. I don't really see it going any higher than this. Just a thought. But Planetside seem to be based and co-ordinated attacks, so communication is going to need to be there. But with a setup similar to this, you wouldn't need more than 3 channels for anyone. I say 3 because, I assume there would be a shout(local area) channel that anyone could use at any time. Platoon = 3 squads. Outfit = Hundreds of people (like a guild in DAoC) Command channels solve most of the communications issues you saw in DAoC by letting commanders (of ranks 1-5 star) talk to each other up and down the channels (like radio communication in the military) to allow sitreps to pass freely among players. Additionally, as suggested above, I suspect a lot of folks will use live voice communication with their squad members. I know that *I* will. But even without live voice, there are voice macros, the ability to make customized text macros, quick ways to message squad members, and more already built into the game to minimize your typing times. I think you'll find that communications is excellent in PlanetSide. But once beta opens up, we'll be listening, so just let us know. http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/p...ML/001820.html

I don't like it. 10 people is ok, but 15 people fit in a Galaxy which means that your vehicle crew is entirely left out of the squad for terms of reward charing. Now you're left trying to squeeze a transport squad into a platoon with two squads of infantry. Again, while this is workable it certainly makes things more difficult for commanders trying to put an assault force together, compared to the simple 1 full galaxy == 1 squad.

It does mean that a platoon does fit pretty nicely in 2 galaxies tho.
14 in each and 2 pilot escorts.
