AMS Tactics
I have been playing this game (aside from a short hiatus) since exclusive beta, and my favorite cert in the game is, without a doubt, the AMS, or as I call it, the BRICK, because of the way it handles and looks. I will often times spend an entire fight focusing on my BRICK, with very effective and fun results. I think I now how to handle it pretty well, I posted this before (ALONG time back, and seeing has how a majority of they names I see are new, I figured, what the heck) and I figured Id share my love of the cert with you guys to. 1.) The placement of the BRICK A lot of people I see just plunk an BRICK down anywhere they see fit (more then likely just to the side of a road) and, surprise surprise, their BRICK only lasts a very short while. I always pride myself on making one BRICK last several fights. The first step to setting up a successful BRICK is the placement. Almost everyone knows to find a place with tree cover and no line of sight with the enemy, but there is more then just this. Every time I place an BRICK I always make sure that the BRICK is pointed towards the fight. This means that all soldiers spawning at my little mobile base must travel the length of my BRICK to get to the fight. The fact that they must travel to the back to gear up and past the front to go fight ensures that some of the security is in there hands and cuts down on the success rate of enemy cloaker jacking the BRICK. In addition to this, make sure that you never place a BRICK in close proximity to a base wall or tower. The enemy can see the cloak bubble through the wall and will call air support or cloakers to you position very shortly to make your life a lot more difficult and a lot shorter. Also, try to find objects that soldiers cannot get around to put between your BRICK and the fight. This tries to ensure that they dont make a bee-line from your baby to the fight (although this will happen anyways). 2.) The Defense of the BRICK This is probably the most important step in setting up your mobile spawnnshop. The first step is to learn Combat Engineering, or make good friends with a combat engineering. The first thing I do is to ring the inside of the cloak bubble with mines, this ensures that anybody trying to sneak into the BRICK area without good luck will be stopped in their tracks. Basically, they dont see the mine (thanks to the bubble) unless they already stepped on it. For those with good luck, I through in one additional surprise. I always place on mine under the front of my BRICKs (the place where you deploy it) as that is where 99% of BRICK hacks take place. I do this just incase he survived/missed the other mines. Besides, they never see that one coming. In addition, I never put spitfires up in or around an BRICK unless the BRICK has already been uncovered by the enemy (in which case Im moving it, but more on that later). The fact is that nobody wastes one of their ten spits on an area unless there is something in that area worth protecting. Now in a smaller scale fight where my involvement will actually amount to something, this is where I stop. I follow the rest of my team and help them, only checking up on my BRICK whenever I respawn there. But when I am involved in a zerg, and a reliable span is more important then my involvement in the combat, I baby-sit. It may sound boring, but I think this is where this cert pays off. 3.) Babysitting As a cloaker I used to waste my time trying to fight when zerging. Half the time I died to friendly fire and the other half I spent 30 minutes sneaking up a tower hallway just to get killed while hacking the tower CC. Not much fun. that is why I spend my zerg hours clocked at my BRICK. Here, dark light vision is important, because cloakers will take a very high interest in your BRICK. They like nothing more then to hack and jack your baby. Now your job basically comes down the prowling the perimeter and kill any enemy getting to close. There is not much too it. Just remember that a lot of cloakers will not tell there squad when they find a BRICK. They would rather not, because they know that if they tell their squad they will have 3 reavers on their location before you can say, Wait, Im still down here beside, it is much more fun to hack an BRICK then to let your grunt buddies have all the fun. That is why I do not move my BRICK unless I am discovered by grunts or higher. Cloakers are just something I have to deal with personally. Some of the most fun I have had in Planet Side is when I encounter a particularly dedicated/stubborn cloaker and we play spy vs. spy completely oblivious to the epic zerg going on in the neighboring base. But sometimes the BRICK needs to be moved, and when it does, it needs to be moved quick. 4.) Moving the Brick This is where things get dicey. You see, an BRICK is much like a cloaker. They are very valuable unless they are discovered. When discovered they die, and quick. Orbital strikes, reavers, artillery, decimators, and tanks will all spell a quick end unless you can get your brick out of there before they get there. This is a pretty easy thing to grasp, simply undeploy and drive away. If my BRICK is not the only spawn point available, I will often times just drive it away for awhile until things cool down, then drive it back. This isnt always an option though, so make sure you are always on the look out for alternate good places to lodge your brick. Just make sure you remember to redeploy your Combat Engineer defenses. 5.) The offensive uses of Your Brick I know what you are thinking, Of what offensive use can a brick be? Well Ill tell you. Suicide bombing. Its dirty pool when it comes to real life, but in a video game, it is just fine by me. In case you havent noticed, bricks make a huge explosion when they kick the bucket. This is normally a hindrance as it takes out all friendly in the area. But what if there are no friendly around? Whenever my squad encounters an enemy BRICK in a small fight where we lack the vehicles or heavy weaponry to take it out, I just grab a brick, and ram it right into the enemies brick and wait. If I get out and run, they will hack it, but if I stay in it, they have no choice but to blow it up. When they do, there goes there brick, and usually, everyone around it. It is also a fun to pull it RIGHT in front of the door of an enemy heavy tower and wait till they blow you up to clear the door and kill everyone in the lobby. The rest just writes itself. I hope I have helped the Planetside community have a little more respect for the cert and for the brick itself. If you have any tips or tricks to add, please feel free.

Don't forget to ram the equipment terminals of enemy AMS. It renders them useless. Also, if someone is sitting in his AMS, shoot Radiator shots at him 'til he dies and then hack it.
Yah, the AMS is cool. They need a flying one though.

Yah, they have flying spawn-points in Battlefield: 1942 and it doesn't hurt gameplay at all. Would make PS cooler. Then again, perhaps the orbital platforms in the next expansion will serve just as well. We'll see.

Pure speculation. I heard the beta people talking about it and it just seemed like a natural way for the game to expand.

morons who park the ams right up against a tower are no longer morons: half the spawing soldiers end up on the roof of the tower.
if you hop down, get your gear, and deconstruct to re-spawn there, it's like an instant gal-drop, but with more people.

Actually, the Lodestar's field name is the TRASHCAN. AMS has always been, and I imagine will always remain, the only BRICK on the battlefield.
Soliloquist, I'm not sure who is burying the Galaxy, because I fly them all the time. All you have to do is recall or bind to the closest off-continent dropship center, and you can keep a Galaxy around throughout a campaign. It does, however, require a pilot who doesn't mind missing out on some XP when he loses his ship though, and has to travel back through a warpgate or two. A flying spawn point would be really sweet, especially if you could lock it to squad or platoon members as needed. |
