Author Topic: Naval units
RRComander Station Member Registered: Jan 2003 posted 01-28-2003 09:13 PM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I read that the PS team plans on trying to release naval units after the game gets going, im curious, any ideas to what there will be? (if someone from the team knows any, itd be greatly appreciated ) Im sure they will be futuristic, but, perhaps sometime of a sub with cruise missiles? *grins* yea yea, i dobu that, but man oh man would those be useful in the right map... anyways, just curious if anyone knows of any, or what ur thoughts are of what they will be like.. personally, more there is to do the better the game, i get bored with FPS that lack tanks/helis/aircraft (just standard FPS) though they are fun, they lack a lasting appeal i think.. Damn the Torpedoes! Full Beta ahead! SmokeJumperPS Station Admin Registered: Sep 2001 posted 01-29-2003 09:55 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clarification: We are not "planning" on adding navies. We have it on a big list as a *possibility* that we *might* add after release. Features for post-release are still not finalized. We are waiting to see reactions to the game during External Beta http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/p...ML/001983.html

No other way at all. Things I'd like to see in a naval expansion: Aquatic suit: Bulky as a reinforced, equipment like an agile... allows swimming (as opposed to walking along the bottom), and doesn't run out of air Gill implant: Still stuck with walking along the bottom, but now you can't run out of air. Swimming implant? One-man submersible: Little jet-ski sized craft, open cockpit, driver requires an aquatic suit. PT boat: 2-3 man crew, plus room for some passengers below decks. Pretty decent deck gun... either the 12mm chaingun (like wall turrets) or a 75 mm cannon. Submarine? Not so sure... maybe if it could only attack boats. A TOW-type weapon would be too powerful. Ferry: big slow boat that can carry several vehicles on deck of any size, and a whole boat load of people (so to speak), a full platoon? While on deck, the vehicles could fire, but the transport itself is unarmed. An AMS would not be considered deployed... unless the engine is up for having people walking around on a moving ship (not likely). Adding boats would also raise some issues. People are going to go too far from the continents more often than they otherwise would. Perhaps some sort of visual, or a built-in self preservation autopilot on the boats? These boats would also require some kind of dock to be ordered up... this means a whole new base type, one that might throw an otherwised balanced continent out of whack. Do you add sonar, or let radar work through water? Or do you let submerged craft say off radar, like Mosquitos? |

I would put the loadscreen offshore a little ways, but I'd also determine that the load screen is the line between deep and shallow water and not let the bigger ships zone in. That way you can have amphibious landings, but not coastal bombardment. Then I would add new bases to all the continents called Shipyards that can be used to load or unload assets from the big ships, as well as spawn the ships. Then you attach appropriately long respawn timers based on the size of the vessel. If you have ships but no yard, you could ferry Galaxies out to the deep water, but if the ship wasn't where the Gal pilot thought, he's going in the drink.
Naval Operations is one of the things that would be large enough to represent a whole expansion. I would think that Urban War would be another one.

But you wouldn't be FPSing in the ocean either, it'd mostly be ship to ship conbat.
Space conflict would be feasible. There's only one map which is a big empty cube that goes waaaaaaaaaay out. You put in the planet and a wormhole. The space ships don't go in atmosphere and the aircraft don't go in space. They put the space station back in (with a couple more scattered in different orbits) and let people fight in the stations. Then you build shipyards in space for space ships, and let them fight over them in space fighters and bigger ships. Nobody needs to travel to any other systems because the wormhole is dead. They could get fancy and add galactic physics with planets orbiting a sun and stations orbiting a planet and opposing gravitational fields, but it wouldn't be necessary because space is big and empty.

The point could be that the stations are Zero Gravity. Now that would add an element to the combat. And if you want more objective purpose to space, you can make a real dropship, one that is capable of traversing space and dropping into the atmosphere above a continent. Make it smaller than the Galaxy and require a long recharge in continent before it can break atmosphere again. Instead of a squad of soldiers, light vehicle bay and a crew of 4, it carries a pilot, a gunner, and one deliverer (half-squad transport) or lighter vehicle. Give the gunner a front-facing turret and the pilot a set of rockets. If they did that I would only need one Certification (and the prereqs).
Plus, between Navy, Space, Air, and Land, you would have a lot of specialists in the game, and there is a lot of room for unique sets of certifications. Also note that I'm talking about a few years after launch. They would probably try to release expansions at around the same rate EQ has followed. Expansions need to be easy to separate so that players want to buy them but don't have to buy them to play the game. That is done instantly by requiring the expansion to get any of the Navy or Space certs. Then they can see all the equipment, and even ride along (so the ppl who do buy the expanison get full value) (but probably not shoot the guns?), but they can't get full use of all the cool stuff they see.
