Mouse problems

When I play FPS's, every 50 seconds or so, my mouse becomes all laggy and such, while my computer is still running fine (I can move around with WSAD with no lag). These "spikes" can last from 1- 7 seconds, it gets REALLY annoying when I have an enemy in front of me and I can't aim at him if my life depended on it. I have tried using a different mouse, a mousepad, and official mouse drivers that came with the mouse. This really ruins my gameplay and any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh and this problem only happens when I'm playing first person shooters. RTS's are fine.

I have a:

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 2700+
512 PC3200 DDR RAM
Geforce 4 Ti 4800SE

Good luck solving my mystery.

So wait... your FPS dont slow down... only your mouse? And only in-game?

Is it a USB mouse? Do you have any other USB peripherals connected to your computer? I've heard of issues where multiple USB peripherals can have performance problems.

Other than that, I can only say that it has to be some kind of driver issue. Check for updated mouse drivers at your mouse manufacturer's website... and if that doesnt improve anything go into your Device Manager and check to make sure your mouse isn't trying to use some of the same resources as another device on your computer. Also make sure you don't have multiple mice drivers installed.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head that might be causing this issue... but to be honest I don't know a great deal about mouse issues. I've always used a trackball myself... ::braces himself for the flames...::

hmmm. Well, all I can say is that I used to have a whole bunch of USB stuff hooked up to my computer, and it caused my cable modem (connected via USB) to crash every few hours... and that was only during FPS games as well. As I recall, too many things running at once would cause the USB driver to crash, causing all my USB devices to fail. Only restarting my comp would reset things.

Dunno if this is your problem... like I said I've also heard of performance issues with too many USB devices connected. Wierd that it only started happening recently as well... dunno. Try disconnecting a bunch of stuff and then seeing if it runs any better. If that doesnt work... well, you're gonna need to talk to some of the tech people on this forum who are smarter than I.
