Not likely to work in this case, but I've seen stranger things happen.
Place the hard drive in your freezer for a while. Overnight works best. Next day, remove the drive, and hook it up and see if it will access the drive. It usually works marvelously with drives that are failing and intermittantly functioning through normal usage. It's certainly worth a shot even if you did drop the drive, and it can't do anymore damage than you've already done.

I should get a crappy 20G drive and test this out. |

No BS. I'm an electronics tech for a very large company, I've done it many a times to save data for people.
Give it a try Everay, it can't fuck it up anymore than it already is. It's a longshot, but would you rather know you tried everything you could, or just give up now?

It will not get wet in the freezer, I wouldn't reccomend placing it in there without something placed under it of course, but never in my experience has the unit ever become wet, nor shorted a system out. The drives are hermetically sealed also, so there's no way the inside of the drive could have any moisture in it.

If you freeze a drive, put it in a ziplock bag and make sure theres 0-minimal air in there. Don't do it overnight, just 3-4 hours will do. Try to use 2 bags if possible, because even a small hole may cause trouble.
It actually works pretty well, I had a drive that was failing and in the middle of a backup it pooped out on me. I froze it for 3.30hrs and then plugged it in. It only gave me about an hour of run time on the drive, but I got everything backed up
