This is awesome - I always thought Burt Rutan's design was the best (I researched the competitors for a report), it was well-planned and logically functioning.
I expect they will win the X-Prize before the year is out, and I expect to train for my astronaut wings sometime before the decade is out ....

EDIT: Seriously... It'll be cool to know that I knew an astronaut when I was a kid...

They launched today with only one man in the cockpit - they're going to do it twice more, with three people on-board, and then they'll officially win the X-Prize.
If I were on one of the competing teams, I'd either put a flame under everyone's ass and try and beat them (doubtful, since they'd have to get their FAA license to do it, and secure a launching site) or I'd start selling off the pieces to cover my debt! This is so amazing that we lived to see the day!

Just kidding. That owns. Will he make it by the end of the year? Don't know. However, there are some weird entries: One of them has a rocket which is to be towed up by a hot-air balloon and then fired. Another has a sea launch.

The gun katas. Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically predictable element. The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly. |
