Hunter Helton was recovering Friday at home from the wound to his left hip. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital on Thursday after emergency workers became concerned the ivory tusk might have hit a bone or an artery.

Hunter had seen Spider-Man 2 on its opening day Wednesday and was playing at his grandmother's home, imitating some of the super hero's moves.

But as he jumped around the den with his siblings and a cousin, the boy lost his balance and fell into a filing cabinet and then hit the heavy mahogany elephant his grandmother had bought in Africa. Half the elephant's large ivory tusk broke off and got stuck in his body.

"It was horrifying," said Nikki Mitchell, Hunter's mother.

At the hospital, x-rays showed the tusk hadn't punctured anything serious. A surgeon was able to remove the object without surgery, instead cleaning the area and stitching it closed. Doctors told Mitchell that Hunter was lucky the injuries weren't more serious.

Mitchell said she was proud of her son keeping his composure during the ordeal. He'll be rewarded with a Spider-Man 2 video game.

"That was his motivation through it all," Mitchell said. "I'm like, whatever it takes.

"He was really brave," she said. "We're lucky it was a happy ending."
Triggar, you're right. The mother is dumb.

Right, but he did it to GET the videogame. Making him the scum of the planet and worthy of incineration.

I have a mixed opinion on this, i really don't support rewarding people for stupidity, however we can't really know how he reacted afterwards. If he was calm, allowed the doctors to do there job with a minimum of fuss (I had to have 4-5 guys hold me down to get my shots so I could go to school) and "took it like a man", for lack of a better expression, I could see him deserving some sort of reward for it. He learned his lesson about doing stupid shit when he was stabbed, some positive reinforcement for responding correctly isn't neccessarilly bad.

edit: Anyway, he's five years old, thats the age where you learn not to do stupid shit, you can't exactly rail on the parents or the movie for his actions because in the end he is probably better of for having them happen to him anyway. I seriously doubt he's going to impale himself for a video game again, but I bet he'd keep his cool better next time if thats what got the game for him.

edit: i never said that infernus, read closer, all i said was that it's a learning experience

Erm... he's 5... children have imaginations you know... he was being the cool guy in the movie he had just seen... letting him imagine is a bad thing? Or should we stop the imagining stuff too? This was a freak accident...

Infernus, it was a stupid thing to do, you can't possibly defend that, that doesn't make him stupid, that makes him 5, theres a reason why little kids are tough, it's like on the job training for life.
