Physics will do a lot for the game. Seriously. Even Counter-strike: Source benefits from the physics. They're just really cool, and because they're so life-like, it adds considerably to the immersion. Hell, just the way you
die is awesome. Usually rag doll physics are retardedly exaggerated and nothing like real life, but Source does it admirably. Some of the coolest deaths I've ever seen are from Counter-strike: Source. Like one guy who was crouching there, and a CT came around the corner, fired a few shots, one of which hit and killed the guy outright. His model just dropped his gun, stayed crouched for a second, then slumped forward. I've never seen anything like it.
There are some videos that demonstrate how the phsyics will also make the gameplay more varied, but one good example is an older video which showed the demonstrator run into a building, close the door, and push a table behind the door to try and block it. The enemy soldiers came to the door and tried to open it, but they couldn't. There was a brief pause, and then bam, door flies open, table is knocked back. They kicked the door in. It was really cool to watch. Even if the game is totally ho-hum, the physics and the way the AI interacts with the physics looks really cool and like it may be a ton of fun. I'm no HL2 fanboy, but Source can have my manbabies any time.
Also, I hope Doom 3's expansion doesn't take place mostly in dark, building interiors which look all the same. The level variety is really what killed that game for me. It was just so boring going through dark, gloomy facility interior to dark, gloomy facility interior with a couple orange barrels, to dark, gloomy facility interior with blue glowing machines.
