New Desktop...

I'm gonna be building a new desktop (hopefully) soon and would like some suggestions on what I already have.

Case: CoolerMaster Cavalier Mid Tower Case
Motherboard: GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS Ultra-939" NVIDIA nForce3
Processor: AMD A64 3200+
RAM: 1GB (2x 512MB) PC3500
HardDrives: Two 120GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA II
Video Cards: GeForce 6800GT or 6600GT (cheaper and looks like its close to being just as good)
Artec 52x32x52 CD-RW
NEC 16x Double Layer DVD+/-RW

All of that plus the various wiring required... close to 1200 dollars using the 6600GT, 1400 dollars with a 6800GT. All I need is a PSU - I'm guessing 500W or so, any suggestions?

The only thing I personally am not sure about is the case, and I'm no expert.

The video card is cheaper, but it is no comparison at all, its a butchered 8 pipe card. Worthless.

Power Supplys, you really dont need 500w, You need ams, the higher on the +12 they are the more you can power.

Brands to check out, Antec, Vantec, Thermaltake, Xconnect, er Pc Power and Cooling. I'm forgetting some.

Coolermaster wavemaster looks cooler. get that.

The 66 is half the price and is quite good, it is better thatn a 9800pro in alot of instances, great card IMO.

as long as the 3200+ is a 90nm core go for it

So... on the recommendation of a few people I've decided to wait for nForce 4 motherboards and I'll be getting a PCI-X 6800GT. I've also decided to get PC4000 ram and a bigger fan/heatsink for overclocking.

Why 2 120Gb disks? If it is for a RAID 0 setup then don't bother unless it is for video editing where the stripe size will be large. I have 2 80GB deathstars and the perfomance where the OS is on one and the swap is on the other is much better that RAID 0. Also if one disk crashes, like mine did, you lose the lot.

Good luck with the build

ROFL This is almost my exact setup right now. Except for the mobo and the case (MSI Neo2 Plat and Coolermaster Praetorian (Virtually silent!))

So far I've gotten a 68% gain in Aquamark3 and a 47% gain in 3dMark05 when paired against my old system.

So far, the only game I've played on my 6600GT is WoW, of which is really hard to get any sort of performance idea out of. Thinking of purchasing HL2 to see how she looks.

You cant have a too powerful PSU...but lots a bad shit happens when you have too little.

I would say an Antec TruePower 550W.

The X-Connect 500W Modular Power supply is absolutely a godsend. HIGHLY recommend it esp if you're a neat freak like me. Only use the connections you need. Also comes with SATA power cables now too.

X-Connect gets my patented Buddy Christ award

Who the hell cares about a case? It's what's inside that really matters. I just have a plain gray case with a decent window.
