Is a surround sound system worth it?

So for this Xmas I was thinking of being gifted with a surround sound system. I've heard only good reviews about the Audigy 2 ZS and that's my sound card of choice. The speakers is the Logitech Z-640, which I believe received the Editors Choice from Techware Labs.
Now I mainly want to use it for gaming and was wondering if it's worth it for the games I currently play, below is the small list.

Rome: Total War
Call of Duty
Half-Life 2

And possibly music if I ever get into it properly.

I love surround sound systems for music - however, I prefer the headphones for all games. I just feel more... immersed? The sounds are just closer to me and feel more real. Plus I dont hear everything else in the room

Music: Definate yes
Gaming: Depends on your style

I have a 5.1 system. Helps so much for games like CS. You hear footsteps behind you, spin around and Bam! you nail the 'sucka' holding a knife with a shot to the head. Well worth it.

Hell ya they're worth it, sometimes I just walk around in circles in HL2 just to hear stuff from all sides.

Surround Sound seems cool, But how do you hook it up? Like where exactly do you plug it into your T.V. for example?
