How do you feel on Christmas?

Figured I'd get the consensus around here.

For some, Christmas is one of the best times of year, their family and friends all together and what not. Gifts and good food and so-on. General Christmas cheer.

For others it's kind of a bummer. Like valentines day is a bummer for poeple who don't have someone to share it with. Or like thanksgiving day is a downer for people who eat too much turkey and get horrible shits for the rest of the week. (Limey's need not apply)

I'm just curious...

For me it's kind of a bummer this year. We are going to mexico. Sure, that's all fun and great, but I dont particularily find mexico enjoyable, especially when I am cooped up in some resort with my parents. I'd rather be able to stay around, spend time with friends, and generally relax. My parent's idea of relaxation is some holiday in an exotic land where you can get all sorts of diseases and you always shred your feet up on something in the water.

This is going to be a weird Christmas for me.

I'm in a religious transitionary period. I've confirmed that I personally do not believe the things that I used to believe (i.e. that Jesus is the savior of the people), and therefore don't feel the need to celebrate his birth as I have done in previous years.

However, I'm spending this Christmas with my in-laws (whee!) who will undoubtedly make us go to midnight mass. I can appreciate the belief system of others, and I'll go to church, hell maybe it'll open my eyes to something I missed before. Who knows.

Usually Christmas time is a pretty sweet time. My family goes all out. My mom still thinks we're little, and likes to give us a bunch of presents to unwrap, and she makes us all take turns opening things so she doesn't miss anyone's reaction. Usually we all unwrap our stuff and then abscond to try on our new clothes and leave the wrapping paper all over the family room floor. My mom's cool and gives us about 30 seconds to come back downstairs and clean it up. Then me and my two sisters fight over the hot water because we all have to shower and be ready to meet my aunt, uncle and cousins to go to church. Then we go to church, come home, and fight over who has to pick up my grandparents. Then I end up going because I'm a sucker, and we spend the rest of the day eating too much and playing Italian cards.

Good times

Edit: I forgot to mention that my family has a tradition of having a massive fight each holiday. My mom gets really stressed out and the fight will start with something like this:

MOM: "Patty, can you go to Tops to get some mozzarella?"
PATTY: "Hang on, I have to shower."
MOM: "Patty JUST GO!"
PATTY: "Mom! Relax! I have to shower first then I'll go!"
MOM: "YOU UNGRATEFUL BITCH! JUST GO!"

It's to the point now that we'll just burst out laughing and that'll piss my mom off more, but ohhh it's funny. My family is nuts.

I can't wait to see how John's family does it, they're so Norman Rockwell. I bet they'll have like, a singalong in front of the piano. I love what I'm marrying into

It's diversity time, kids!

On Christmas Eve (Nochebuena- "Good Night") everybody goes to one of my relative's houses where we partake in the perennial Cuban feast: pork in the massive oven box, rice and beans, cassava, and plantains- no vegetables in sight.

This persists until about 12 AM when we must return to base, at which point we are promptly told to go to sleep.

We wake up and Santa has left us presents under the tree

Sometimes when I hear dad moving around the gifts I go help him: my littler brother has ordered about 10,000 GI Joe action figures this year (thanks a lot, FenslerFilm).

We go open them, I feign suprise next morning for the one family member who still believes in Santa, and we spend the rest of the day all happy playing with our newfangled crap. We really should go to Church, but the parents have been lax about it- they are busy on Sundays which leads them to not want to go on Christmas Day.

So, how do I feel? Not bad at all, happy. Relaxed, mostly, because school is over.

The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly.

It used to be a good time until I joined the military. Last year I couldn't afford the plane ticket, because my leave didn't get approved until 1 WEEK before I wanted to leave. I ended up waiting to go home until January. Christmas will once again be a lonely time.
