AFAIK Sgt. Ryan wasn't killed btw, 'only' wounded.

Actually Pants, there are plenty of sniper type weapons in that region. AKs converted into SVD Sniper rifles. SKSes, Tokorev T40s, Mosin Nagants. There are plenty of traditional sniper rifles in that area because of all the black market soviet weaponry. Plus the Urban cities in Iraq provide good cover and line of sight for snipers.

Yeah, i mean really, have you not seen any films set in the middle east? Every single one* has at least one child with a sniper rifle in.

*this is not true. But the film "Three Kings," does.
