New Processor? Recommendations?

Okay, people, my problem is as follows:

On Republic Commando, my machine regularly has 15 second freeze periods, like it's loading another part of the level, but there's no load screen, so I don't think it's supposed to happen.

My stats are as follows:
Windows XP
30 Gig piece of crap HD
512 Megs of Memory
1.5GHz AMD Athlon 1800+ Processor
GeForce 4 4400 Video Card
SoundBlaster Live! Value Sound Card

Thx for the help, in advance.

if you wanna be cheap, i was looking around on THG, and noticed the Sempron 3100+, and it can compete with the 64 3000+, but it is so much cheaper, like $100 cheaper, so thats the cheap way out... or you can buy a 64 3000+, for 100+, but you will have future compatibility... also, do something about your video card, a 6600 is pretty cheap, only about no more than 150+...

Semprons can not compete at all with 64s.

"which has no 64 bit instruction set and only 256 kB L2 cache"

First off, Toms Hardware is crap.

Considering that his current system is a socket A, which means an entire upgrade. The jump from socket A to 754 with a Sempron = negligable, not worth the money. Socket 939 with a 3000+ will eat a sempron for breakfast, and have dual channel, and won't cost much more.

If you actually look at the real world benchmarks and in the Toms hardware review, it is slower than an older equally priced A64. Even overclocked.

MattxMosh is correct. An AMD 64 Socket 939 is the way to go. They've fallen down significantly in price, and believe me, you don't want to be stuck with a Socket 754 motherboard either. They have no dual-RAM capabilities, tend to be finicky if you want to add more than 2 sticks of dual sided DDR RAM to them, and generally are not nearly as good as the Socket 939s. I have a 754 and I'd really like to lose it and replace it with a 939 mobo and CPU as soon as I can.
