Download Freeze

I started launchpad and i get past the login screen and start patching then it gets to one file and the download speed drops dramatically ( have broadband) then it gets about 70% through the file and stops or the download cancels i have looked around and havnt found any usefull advice can anyone help me with this? would be much appreciated
