Tips by Noobs from Noobs

Second week playing this game as part of Vanu and I'm enjoying the game to a degree (I just wish I found the other certs anywhere close as enjoyable as Unimax and Combat Engineering [though infiltration suit is getting pretty close])

In my time playing the game I have seen and done some questionable things in the game and wanted to start up a discussion just to help each other out.

Tip 1: If you see someone shooting at the floor (like me) don't walk where they are shooting. They may be trying to clear a land mine.

Tip 2: No problem in clicking respawn when in a small group but in a large group wait a few seconds first. There's a good chance an Advanced medic wanted to res you. If you are a MAX user you definately should wait. I've jumped the gun myself but learned my lesson quickly. Can't say the same from what I've seen of others.

Tip 3: Anyone can hack a control console. No need to panic when noone has a hacking cert.

Tip 4: Do not wear NC MAX suits. It's traditional for the good looking quickwitted person to defeat the ugly dimwitted badguy. The moment you ever stepped into a MAX fight with such unbelievably ugly suits against my Vanu teammates and myself or our Terran Republic counterparts you automatically lost.

Dont try and take on max's with a knife, it sounds silly. I see it often though

Dont forget noobs, have been brought up on a diet of Counter Strike. Where you instinctivly switch to the knife when ur out of ammo. Trust me it doesnt work (ive tried it)

Tip 3: (A)
If you are not in a Max, carry a REK.

If you and I are standing at a door, I am in a max, you are not, and we can't open the door because you didn't have room in your 1337 loadout for one....I WILL SHOOT YOU MYSELF!!!!!!!

Tip 3: (B) Stay away from Majik if you're not a MAX and don't have a REK.

4) When you are in the caverns, and you find yourself in a large room with a revolving beam... do not step into the beam.

You will utterly explode.

5) Plasma grenades hurt enemies, but they hurt friendlies and yourself equally.

6) Darklight vision is one of the most popular implants.

7) Personal Shield is another popular implant.

8) Dont carry AP ammo.

9)I repeat don't travel where people are shooting at the ground.
(I was clearing a minefield infront of a tower and some guy in a Lightning is barreling straight towards me. The guy as a tanker should simply have had enough expierence to know where he was driving is a good place for mines.)

9A) In fact just watch where you are walking while not fighting an enemy period.

10) Ancient tech is great except for the Flail. Don't even think of investing cert points into it.

11) Use and protect turret guns. They go through the shields of BFRs. THat alone is reason enough to use them. It also helps that they can smack down Reavers pretty good and can rotate 360 degrees so you can attack players who try to swarm your base from the top.

12) THis is for noob engineers. Do not place mines in front of the door ways at the top of the various towers. This makes them easy to destroy. Instead aim your targetting reticle outside the door until it is green and step back as far as you can. This technique allows you to place a mine inside the door where there's no chance of it being wasted before hurting or killing the enemy. If you want to be really mean and you don't have the space to put a spit fire on one of the two corners near the doors you can also hide the spit fire inside the door just like mines and that spit fire can cover both doors and easily fustrate players trying to hack the door right by the spitfire. It even gets better with newbs because they'll destroy the spitfire and in their panic forget to clear the blast radius of the explosion.

Just use jammers man. I just use my CUD, but Jammers work fine. Then you wont have to worry about wasting ammo or whatever.

The Flail is a great vehicle, and if used properly can surpress a whole zerg.

When CE-ing the top of a tower, put mines on the railings. They are impossible to see and are a real surprise, and blow up if better. Reaver/Mossy whores who get too close are unexpecting, and towerdroppers dont check railings.

Some tips from a recent reservist...

- Do not make a deployed AMS a target by shooting at anything whilst being near it unless in defence of the AMS itself. Also, if you're the driver, try to deploy it out of direct Line-of-Sight of the enemy because having enemies showing up out of thin air (the cloaked bubble of a deployed AMS) is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS!!!

- In any case the Punisher is the most practical weapon against everything except aircraft. It has a longer range than what you might suspect by its 2x scope range - but for best accuracy fire single shots or very short bursts... full automatic fire is only recommended in static crouched position, if at all. Also, rockets and grenades have an incredible range, you just have to lob them high enough!

- If you have the Engineering skill always prefer to take a B.A.N.K. instead of any pistol-thingy device or AMP, you can restore your armor with it (and that of other people whose survival will help your own as well!). Packing a B.A.N.K., the best implant to go along with it to complete the "combat survival kit" is the Regeneration implant - very useful, especially standing still where the stamina also regenerates.

Also,

- Be VERY careful when crossing bridges which connect to facilities controlled by the enemy. Bridges are a chokepoint since most vehicles have to use them to cross waterways. Drive SLOWLY across them - you'll only be able to spot mines when it's almost too late!!!

  • Don't use the punisher rocklets
  • If you do use the punisher, turn auto reload off. Fire a plasma grenade at your target and then switch to bullets and finish them off.
  • Don't be afraid to ask veteran players for help.
  • Unless you're extremely patient, don't start out as an infil. Learn the game first.
  • Don't mind the players with 100/10 kill/death ratios, don't let them get you down. PlanetSide is 90% knowledge and 10% ability. Lots of people have been playing this game for nearly 3 years, don't get frusterated if you don't master it in your first week.
Just a few tips, guess I'm not really a noob, but I don't think it'll hurt any.

One of the biggest mistakes noobs make......
  • Don't go off by yourself if your infantry (rambo style = Dead soldier).
  • Always stay with a group so you have someone watching your flanks and you watch theirs (at least 2 guys with you).
  • Keep good spacing so one grenade or rocket doesn't blow you all up.
  • The guys who your with shouldn't all have the exact same loadouts. somebody has to have anti-air/anti-armor weapons (if you all have assault rifles, only thing your gonna kill is other foot soldiers which does you no good when you have a MAX or Misquito barreling down on your position).
  • If you don't know what to do, ask the squad leader, platoon leader, a vet or someone. In general, when in doubt, follow others and cover their backs.

this tip will only work for NC

If there's a max near you walk behind him when his shield is activated it will kinda protect you from rocket blasts

helped me 2 years ago while i played it...returning now
