I used to play Planetside a long time ago, but ended up leaving it due to difficulties with payment method (No credit card, no stores carried game cards). However, I always liked the game; it was a lot of fun, and coordinated attacks on enemy posts were a blast. I used to drive a Lightning and I would stand back and hit the enemy base with my cannon, or ride alongside tanks to support them. I also tried sniping and MAX suits.
I wasn't very good at anything, but my computer wasn't the best and I didn't have a lot of experience with FPS games at the time. I used to play TR and VS, but I never got above BR 5 (I think), so I never really got to experience the nuances of either empire.
So, now Planetside has a free year thing out. I'm downloading the update right now (Roughly 9:26:00 left), and I've been reading up on Empires and the like, checking threads, and still I'm not quite sure which empire I would like to join. New Conglomerate I've never cared for (They have some nice colors, but freedom-loving hippies aren't my thing), so I never really gave them much of a thought. As an aside, I believe the server I will be playing on is Emerald (That's the USEast server I think), so if that factors in so be it.
The Terran Republic appeals to the Warhammer 40K, Space Marine part of me. Not to mention the Mini Chaingun has to be the coolest-looking weapon ever (Reminiscient of Rico's chaingun in Killzone, and I loved that gun). I used to be a big MAX player, but I don't remember many fond memories of TR MAX suits; I never seemed to be able to kill anything, although that speaks more of my skills than the empire's equipment. I never liked the special ability (Locking yourself down in a firefight seems counterintuitive to everything I have learned from gaming), but in base defense I can see its usefulness.
The Vanu Sovreignity appeals more to the Technocratic Union part of me. Their MAX suits are awesome (They have jump jets for God's sake!), and their vehicles can hover, which I always thought was a pretty useful tactical ability. I am a big RPG player as well, though, and the idea of being an alien-loving technophobe makes me cringe a bit (Trust not the alien, death is the fate of xenos)...yet the idea of being in a flying MAX makes me happy.
I play to my strengths, and vehicles are not among them, save for maybe light tanks or personal transportation. I tried flying planes a long time ago, and failed oh-so-miserably. So I will probably be investing in either HA or MA, along with Uni-Max with whichever empire I choose. TR seems to have the better assault, whereas Vanu seems to have the better MAX.
Which do you guys think I should join? I honestly can't decide, and I don't really want to switch back and forth between two characters when I'm trying to learn the game again. I understand both TR and VS have high learning curves with their styles, but I'm used to trial-by-fire, so I don't think that's too much of a consideration for me.
And if any Outfits are willing to pick up a newbie and help me learn the game again, let me know.
