Completing Commendations

I just joined Planetside 3 weeks ago, and i have a question. I recently finished the Combat Medic Commendation, but i don't see the Merit on my shoulder pad. Is there a way to display it? Secondly, if i forget the cert, will the commendation disappear?

you have to move the badge into your badge slot by dragging and dropping
