Grand Tur-what?

I was curious what the word Turismo meant in Grand Turismo. I did some research and the best answer I could find was the spanish definition for the word, which is tourism. That would mean Grand Turismo means great tourism in spanish. That hardly makes since for a racing game. Does anyone have any greater insight as to the meaning of this word in the context of the game title?

eh Tourism is a shitty english translation.

its closer to Touring. like GT grand touring

not sure how to explain it at 6:30am sitting in an airport hopped up on caffine and cinnabon with no sleep.. but its like 'journey' or 'travel'

Like my Trans Am, its a GTA or Grand Turismo Americano

fancy word for a kick ass car to drive around.

I always thought it was a racing classification. Also, its Gran, not Grand

TIP:

DO NOT TRANSLATE SPANISH WORDS TO ENGLISH WORDS AND TAKE THEM LITERALLY!

There are a lot that fit, but there are also a lot that don't

It's italian and it means Grand Tourer.
