this official forum post. Here is a snippet from the bottom of the pages.
PlanetSide is the world's first persistent massively multiplayer online first person shooter. Three empires struggle for control of the planet Auraxis; each empire unique in their beliefs and arsenals. Choose to help the Terran Republic in their reunification efforts.
