Author Topic: 450K vs. 13K
VortexDark Station Member Registered: Dec 2002 posted 02-26-2003 11:36 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's the current ratio of beta testers registered for SWG vs PS. That clears up the flagship question rather nicely I think. Why isn't there more interest in PS? FPS games are very popular, look at the numbers sold of the better ones. So, why isn't there more hubub over PS? Do people think this game is going to suck or do people have no interest in a persistent FPS? And here is Spork to be nice SporkfirePS Station Admin Registered: Jan 2003 posted 02-26-2003 01:02 PM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As others have said, Star Wars is a very high-profile project but not a higher priority. Management here at SOE believes in PlanetSide every bit as much as Star Wars Galaxies. In my opinion, there are a couple of factors to the beta numbers for the two games. 1) "Star Wars - Nothing but Star Wars," as Bill Murray would croon. That's one of the biggest franchises in entertainment today, therefore the mainstream casual gamer doesn't have to work hard to find out about the game. It probably seems like the game is being marketed more aggressively because the name Markets itself. 2) Star Wars is an RPG, which is the dominant genre in MMO's today. There is a built in audience from the other existing games. We're a new direction in Massively Multiplayer, and so we have the added challenge of making the FPS player aware of our game, and helping the RPG player adapt to this style of gameplay. PlanetSide has its own buzz going on, and will continue to gather steam right up through launch. We've made some Most Wanted of 2003 lists and we've had recent coverage in most of the major gaming magazines recently. Since we are part of a new genre, I think word of mouth is going to help us out a great deal too. Those who are unsure of PlanetSide might give us a try once they have heard how impressed their friends are with us. Of course, we won't rely on word of mouth, but we think it will be a significant factor in our success. We should all keep in mind that EverQuest was virtually unknown when it was first released... That, and since SWG has been turned into utter carebear crap, PS will do fine if it is a well-made game in and of itself (which is still an unanswered question.)

Hell im a starwars freak and i dont even want the game....
I think im all role played out from EQ and all the recent single player RPGs that have been released lately(Dungeon Seige, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind dale, etc.) I cant wait for a game thats MMO that depends on skill and not a random number generator telling me how much dmg im doing. |

I think that star wars has been around for such a long time that it sells itself (plz dont hurt me MR.Brisk) ! PlanetSide is gonna get bigger by Word ov Mouf (plz dont hurt Mr.Ludacris) but all it needs is a good commercial and a couple of good visual displays and it could be just as big or even bigger than SWG because its something new. Thats just my opinion, thnx...for not hurting me! -Dark- CO [TEAR] ps- SWG is too damn expensive, amma wait for the space expansion to come out before i get it.

The proof will be in the pudding.
If this game turns out the way I think it will, I will make everyone I know play it as a community service.

You know, I got so tired of SWG being pushed back, I stopped caring. I'm not even going to get it now. Planetside offers more action, so screw SWG. I am impatient when it comes to release dates. Planetside is gonna be teamwork and action. SWG? Well, lets just say there are people who are PLANNING to be professional Wookie shavers............

That PS beta number is wrong. As of a few weeks ago there were about 30,000 correctly filled out aps. So who knows how many were filled out incorrectly or how many there are now. Maybe SWG is counting all of their aps, both correct and not. I'm also sure there's a lot more people using multiple email accounts to get into SWG then PS.
