Digging into the PlanetSide Media Archive

So I was digging through the Media Archive and came upon these

It's interesting to see allot of the very early things that never quite made it into the game, and their look is nothing like PlanetSide:

The famous penis building..

Yikes!

Some building we never saw.

The game never quite looked like this..

What the hell was this?

Or this..

And how about some PSU memories..

While I wasn't around back then, looks like it was exciting times for PS

I wonder if they will be bringing some of them "early things that never quite made it" to PS:N.

The GFX ain't half bad... Well at least the trees and environment look a bit more detailed than it does now

The tire treads on the buggy is a nice touch.

From what I recall the VS were originally going to be green.

Let me say, Beta for this game was the most fun I've ever had in a game. I was whoring PSU for months leading up to the beta and my expectations were fully met within my first hour in game. I vividly remember my first base cap and I still have screenshots on my comp of the first time I hacked a vanguard.

"Incoming MAX units" </Sporkfire>

Ahhh, the fabled NC flamethrower. And a green Vanguard, that's just wrong.

Beta was fun. I'll never forget the bug where the game crashed if you heard someone die.

Re: Digging into the PlanetSide Media Archive

Many moons ago I dated one of the devs on the original Planetside. Had the pleasure of coming in once or twice a week and getting to mess around during very early stages of the game.

First pic was a flamethrower that was canned in internal because the fire effect caused an insane amount of lag and just couldn't be done.

The 'penis building' was an idea i think for the Vanu towers that was changed when the game became rotating neutral sites.

There were a lot of buildings that were around that never saw the light of day once they canned the orbital stations idea and had sanctuaries un-invadable at release.

And a lot of skins that were on vehicles that got changed under the mantra of 'don't design like a human, design like an alien'. I think I posted many years ago, a pic of the Vanguard with a different skin and some other pics. I still have a disc of old old screenshots of some internal funtime but they're on a ZIP disk. Kinda dates the game doesnt it? lol people were still using zip disks.

cool to see some of the old pics!

Holy crap Zip Disk

That's lost to time now unless you have a reader around - that is unless it has the click of death!
