If you use 3rd party overclocking apps then beware of 7:
Microsoft implemented driver signature enforcement bullshit. I use ATITool, and because they don't pay MS $400 a year for a driver signature, support for the program is cut off. In order to make it work you gotta do some annoying workaround, including pressing F8 every boot and selecting the disable option (doesn't work on its own). Its a pain in the ass. I haven't noticed any real difference in framerate, but there are a lot of good things about 7 that sort of make up for it. Good luck.

On most computers the game runs at like 500 fps. Even on my laptop at max settings it only dips into the low 400 while playing. I would recommend you have at least 2 GB of ram if you want to run Windows 7 well.
There's no reason not to use Windows 7. Any problems you have will be driver related usually. I remember on my old laptop only 1 driver I found made the game run without crashing after 15 minutes. Last edited by Sirisian; 2011-06-08 at 07:34 PM. |

What kind of computer are we talking here? 7 is comparable and can even out perform XP sometimes, but it comes down to your hardware really.
PS is memory heavy, so I'd agree with a 2GB min. Win 7 works just fine with 1GB in my experience. This is my rig CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz GPU: XFX GeForce 9800GT 512 MB RAM: 4 GB DDR2 CL5 Mobo: Asus P5Q SPU: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE HDD: WD Raptor 75GB 10K RPM (OS Only) OS: Windows 7 Mouse: Razor Death Adder I have the fps limiter thing set to 60, and I still hang around 70 to 75 fps with all the graphics turned on (except flora).

4gig Ram Vista GeForce 8800GT 400FPS in sanc 60-75 in large battles(outdoors) Not sure what I get inside but it's good. about 60-200 just walking around outside All settings max. Not sure why you're getting such bad FPS outside. Might be a game issue, might be something on your end. I don't know enough about computers to say, really, but considering the game is about 8 years old, anyone with a semi recent PC shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't think so anyway. |

You shouldn't count your Sanc fps numbers as what the "game runs at" or "while playing". But you are right, any mid grade PC should be able to run PS just fine.
(I still crash when I change continents after playing for a bit, but this is a known issue, I just havn't wanted to hassle to try to fix it.) |

Well to be fair I have a 485m mobile GPU which is the fastest mobile GPU. There are 28 desktop GPUs that should be comparable I guess. Some of them are dirt cheap and would give the same performance. I guess if you're still using 2003 level hardware then results may vary. I posted the specs over here. I do recommend malibal (or another clevo reseller) if you like mobile gaming.

If you really want to improve FPS you need to switch to a Linux distro that uses few resources, allowing your system to dedicate more of its power toward PS. I recommend a barebones distro like Slackware because of its stability and lack of bloatware. Then you need to run a GUI like KDE or Gnome on top of that so that you don't have to learn the menacing command line. Then run WINE on top of that and finally PS using WINE.
You should see an extra 100-200FPS using this approach. |

Hey I know. Why don't we have the OP get a Commodore 64 and run the motherfucker in DOS?
Oh wait. This isn't fucking rocket science and the OP doesn't need to get a huge bunch of bullshit or rare and/or obscure and or specialized gear in order to make the game run faster. Planetside is an old-ass game - there's no reason why a decent computer from the last few years should have a slew of problems running the game. |
