So, it was just announced that SOE is shutting down Star Wars Galaxies on December 15th. I find this extremely interesting in the context of Planetside 2. Basically, the list of SOE games is dwindling, so SOE should be putting more of an emphasis on Planetside 2....one would hope.
Speaking of hope, hopefully SOE will have a new game starting by December 15th to take the place of SWG. Perhaps a certain mmofps? EDIT: Actually, LucasArts probably had more input into this than SOE considering SW:TOR is being released this year, but you never know. Last edited by Raymac; 2011-06-24 at 06:28 PM. |

Kind of sad a little. SWG was the first MMO I played. An still one I remember pretty fondly before they messed it up with updates. I remember unlocking Jedi back when they were still semi rare. Not long after the permadeath thing was removed but they still lost boatloads of xp if Bounty Hunters killed them. When I unlocked the Jedi it was a pretty awesome feeling of accomplishment an having something special. Of course SOE ended up taking a dump all over that later lol.
Anyway yeah it probably has more to do with TOR than anything. Though its not like SWG is any threat to TOR an I would laugh if that's what LucasArts thought. More like no one is gonna stick around an play SWG anymore now not even the hardcore SW fans. |

Im pretty sure Sony wanted to keep SWG alive, but LA forced them to shut it down. Sony isnt the company that shuts something down that still earns them some money, even if it is just a few bucks each month. Take a look at planetside, they kept it going even with low sub numbers. It has always produced enough cash to fund itself, so heck let it live, no harm done.

"Don't like your space flight on rails? Come rejoin the fight in SWG!" But LA obviously has the reigns here. They don't want competition for the game they sunk tens of millions into with EA. |

Yeah that is a good point there. The space combat system in SWG was greatly superior to the arcade shooter minigame of TOR. Then again everything about original SWG was more ambitious. Only thing TOR has right is interesting looking story content and a great advertising budget to make CG movies that look better than the game itself. |
