Empire-specific "OS's"

I don't know if this idea has already been brought up, but i thought it'd be pretty cool if each empire had its own OS-type attack. For example:

NC: a rail cannon from space that deals a massive amount of damage in a relatively small space (like in halo reach)

TR: can't think of a good one that would relate to the TR, but i was thinking a carpet bomb of some sort. It could also leave a huge plume that greatly reduces visibility for a certain amount of time

VS: An EMP that lasts for 5-10 minutes that covers an area the size of a "hex". Maybe a plasma strike that slowly damages infantry and vehicles that covers the same area that lasts 5-10 mins.

Only high ranking commanders that cert these Empire-specific attacks would have it, so you dont have to worry about too much people with the ability. for example, VS stacking the plasma strike in one area making it impossible to fight.

Tell me what you think. I didn't give this idea too much thought, so its probably unbalanced.

Re: Empire-specific "OS's"

I've only been a forum lerker of PSU until now.

I had to make an account to comment on this topic.

I LOVE this idea, If I'm honest the examples you made were very unbalanced and sucked quite a bit, but I believe a well thought out and BALANCED alternative for off-site weapons would greatly increase this games appeal.

Of course these weapons would have huge cooldowns and massivly large resource requirements. However there effects should be devastating.

This is the best idea i've read so far while lerking. Good job.

Empire specific command abilities is interesting. Never seen them in PS1.

The suggestion would go against veteran players and the what may now be traditions of PlanetSide. Each Empire ought to have a Common Pool Oribtal Strike cannon from space at least.

Here's what I previously suggested:

  • Common Pool (all): Orbital Strike
  • TR: Air Strike (stealthed, thundering and decloaking upon destination)
  • NC: Barrage Strike (a two-stage pounding of rapid artillery)
  • VS: Covert Strike (orchestrated, elongated, silent and deadly)
All have Orbital Strike unless an orbital warfare expansion changes that, and all will have their own Strike command ability too. (all:2)
The empire who takes a key location may temporarily possess that enemy's Strike ability. e.g. NC take a VS key location. VS lose their Covert Strike ability. NC commanders are now able to decidedly use Covert Strike or their own Barrage Strike as well as their Orbital Strike. (VS:1)-(NC:2)-(TR:2)

call of duty black ops does this sort of thing but with aircrafts

Well in that case:
NC: 1 big shot, kills everything
TR: requires 4 people to launch it at once and does little to no damage
VS: lots of flashes and particle effects zero damage

I do not, and never have seen the need for an OS.

An OS does not help a commander command, all it does is give a CR4/5 free kills once every 3 hours. This attracts the wrong players to command in turn filling command chat with drivel.

An OS can be and is replaced by the Liberator, Flail and Reavers; high damage in an area which requires a degree of teamwork to pull off; perfect for Planetside.

Check out one of my outfits forum signatures:

That is the perfect example of how it should be done.

I thought the most beneficial use of the OS was to hold the enemy forces at bay when you are being pounded at a base you are defending. In hopes reinforcements arrived soon. But I do agree that there are way too many now on PS1 that have the ability. Fights last for forever due to this. IMO, OS should be restricted to a global commander. So a global commander is one who has been elected, through and election process, to be the main commander for their empire at that time. Perhaps some subordinate role under the GC should also be put in, so that if the current GC logs another election process can take place ASAP to keep the game play going.

Yea I think we both know how bs this would be. Here it took me 2 seconds to come up with a real idea.

NC: 1 big shot, kills everything(ok yea I know I copied it but what else was I supposed to put?)
TR: Rapid fire kinetic strike rods where the commander holds his CUD and uses it to aim the massive MCG like weapon. Each rod has a small blast radius but huge damage.
VS: The Ion Cannon from one of the C&C games(the one where you could aim it as a sustained beam, I think I will chase tanks with it)

I don't see the point of ES OS.

It wouldn't make much difference, and if it did it would be annoying to be the empire (TR) with the crap one.

I really don't like the idea of ES OSes. This is the most powerful weapon in game, so it should be the same for each empire. One empire should not have a clearly better version of a OS either.

Pretty much the same reason to have empire specific anything. Variety is the spice of life.

Yeah, and I don't see the point of ES HA. But it's there, we all like it, and it mixes things up. The same of everything is boring.

Because Orbital Strikes are as frequent as HA, mirite? Yes, I'm aware they CURRENTLY are, but that's only due to bad design.

Anyway, we all know how this will end up:

NC: Strongest OS
TR: Takes three people to use, weaker than the NC OS regardless
VS: Has instant AP mode but people whine that it has worse hit detection than the other two

Well, I think the only ESfication for OSes that can be applied is purely aesthetic.

PS2's factions are visually more distinct (TR - human latest technoloies, NC - human older technologies, VS - alien technologies), so I can suggest:

TR - Classic Laser OS.
NC - Mole nuke OS. By mole I mean that before explosion the nuke digs into the ground. So you have that delay, you have with current OS, to hear the thing and run away.
VS - Lightning OS. Like a giant series of flashes followed by a giant thunderstrike that wipes everything out.

The only difference except looks is sound. But other than that, no technical differences; same radius, same damage, same timer, same instagib with no DoT, same ability to hear when it's coming.
