I think we've known since they dumped inventories that Planetside had at least plans for PS3.

edit: and "stay tuned" may as well be a YES in big flashing neon signs. Unless Smedley has gone insane and thinks that people would be cool with being strung along with maybes to a dissapointment.

Bugger. Well, CS:GO is going to be doing PC + PS3 multiplayer servers, so if valve thinks they can pull it off, I'm willing to consider giving it a shot.

I trust valve to not fuck it up a lot more than I trust the suits at sony though.

I guess I'd be fine with it as long as there was no aim assist on head shots, hopefully no aim assist of any kind. Consoles shouldn't get an artificial handicap to compensate for superior mouse controls.

I have a bad feeling about this, but it's a business decision. Not much we can do about it except hope it turns out for the best.

On the bright side, it would open up Planetside 2 to even more players, which would be awesome. That is, unless the PC and PS3 player bases are separated from each other. In that case it wouldn't affect PC populations much, but at least all the balance concerns would be gone. A small amount of win win.

Then again, it sticks us with console shit like the absence of inventories, so there's that...

The PS3 is just too limited hardware wise too handle a game as massive as what PS2 will be, which has been mentioned plenty of times, I think most recently by Higs actually.

If you go back and watch the Fan Faire Q&A vid-or maybe the one after that, its pretty evident to what Smed is hinting at. Him saying, 'unquoted', "Planetside 2 will not be on the PS.......3."

I don't think Planetside would be very successfull on the console.

I'm going back and looking at all the people who swore they said they would not do this, so I can lol. Don't worry. I won't thread-necro.

I am wholly against the idea unless they are on two separate platforms. IE, PS2 for the PC and PS2 for the PS3, different networks and servers and all that jazz.

Now, it must be said, though, that we'll finally put to rest the notion that console shooter gamers can hold a candle to a novice PC shooter gamer.

I might as well just start wiping the floor with PS3 players already!

Perhaps Sony is going to release a next gen console soon? Maybe one with the Horsepower of a gaming rig computer with mouse and keyboard controls too? That's about the only way this would work.

PS4 is rumoured to be out late 2012 early 2013. They could be planning PS2 to be one of the on release titles for it. Seeing as we are likely to have a free to play model it could even be pre-loaded on the PS4.

Free to play is a big part of the future, but on December 20, we're about to see a huge juggernaut launched at retail [with Star Wars: The Old Republic]. It's going to be a great game and BioWare knows how to make awesome games. And I think the retail model is still there. We're evolving our company into something different. We're in a unique position because we're inside the Sony family and have a lot of good insight into things. We're in a great place for bringing new business models to the console, so we think that's a really strong part of our future. PC is going to be right there neck and neck with it, though.
Thank god somebody still has faith in the PC, and not developing for console and porting it to PC.

Thats a huge problem with consoles, aside from the very very very old 7800gt based ps3 graphics. Thats very little memory to do things with.

Yes you could prob get a stripped down version on ps3 but man you are gonna have to cut out alot. And not just graphics. First off you couldnt let em play with pc players as the parts cut out would most likely not let it be compatible with pc.

Even PS1 really needed more memory than PS3's have to get it to run smoothly, even if you exclude the obvious OS memory req on PC's.

Yes they have got the graphically and scale wise gimped versions of BF3 to run on consoles amazingly enough. However they have to gimp them accordingly with 24 instead of 64 players and ps needs 1500+ people, and maps were shrunk from the pc versions which even those fullsize maps the consoles cant handle are tiny specs compared to PS maps. You can shrink stuff up on deathmatch maps but you are talkin redoing/shrinking the world and player counts to fit it on a console which is like making a game all about racing then takin out the corvettes and ferarris and puttin in ford tauruses and dropping all the racetracks and puttin in parking lots and neighborhood streets. Yeah you can race em but its no where near the same.

Plus the work needed would mean an almost entirely different world with a game with vastly different flow, they would almost need to be balanced (gear/vehicle/stat wise) completely separate of each other. ( a game with a few hundred players doesnt flow at all like one with 1500. So somethin like powerful infantry AV may work great at lower scale but be bad at high scale, and so forth.)

Dont get me wrong, they could do some version, but consoles are sooooooooo amazingly outdated, its gonna be very tough and not sure the game will still be the same. Its too bad they are stretchin out this console cycle so much, the hardware really needs an upgrade. They could then run this on PS4 no problem. Plus we would have all our other games held back by console graphics anymore. =D

This is pretty much the worst news story about PlanetSide 2 I have ever read, Console gaming does not mix with PC gaming. It means we on PC get to suffer with inferior features because console's can't compete.

A sad day for PlanetSide 2, let's hope this does not have any priority in early development.

So true.

The only way I support this is if they are doing something like EVE is with Dust 514.
