My theory on the Etymology of Planetside

Guys, especially in the military, if they were going somewhere, their buddies would ask them "Are you going to go over to that country, or head back Stateside?" Meaning, back to the United States.

From Wikipedia: stateside, a slang term for the United States, usually used concerning an American currently outside the country, particularly in a military context

That's the first thing I thought when I heard the name. Are you going to stay in orbit? Nah, Ima go planetside.

I figured that was where they got it, but don't know if there are guys on here too young to have ever heard that.

When I was in...fucking middle school....holy shit...

I wrote a short story in class about the wormhole closing around the rear of the last ship coming toward Auraxis and I closed with them looking down/heading into the Planetside.

I like the military jargon of it though. I can imagine being on the transport and someone shouting "everyone buckle in - we're dropping planetside!"

It's good to know that I wasn't the only person who wrote something for school based on Planetside.

Don't forget that originally if you used the HART you would have gone from the Sanctuary to the Orbital Station, where you form up with your squad before using drop pods to enter the battle. Thereby going from orbit to planet-side.

Of course you can still do this, but never see the Orbital Station (although the empire specific music for when you are inside is on your hard drive).

Considering that this is a reimagining of Planetside and that BFR's and shit are no more, I think it's safe to assume that the bending never happened and that there is no need for them to explain it, as far as Planetside 2's story is concerned.

I'll be happy as a pig in shit to have the planet back in one piece and forget the whole thing ever happened.

As in "we are going planetside," or "we've spotted a large number of enemy troops approaching one of our planetside strongholds" or "Auraxis is depressed and can't stand to have people fighting over it all the time, so it's going to end it's life by committing planetcide."

3 empires war against eachother on the surface of Auraxis.

But in this conflict....there is no one on the Planet's Side.....

-que epic sequence-

This Spring, a new threat lurks beneath Auraxis, no one will be ready. The Terran Republic works to reopen their wormhole, the Vanu Sovereignty seeks further understanding of the ancient tech and rumors spread that they've made contact with this ancient race!

Meanwhile....The NC still aren't doing anything useful but mess with everyone else!

Neither, I call them purple people and barneys. Technophiles, cavedwellers, and aliens.

They are Xenos lifeforms and their human supporters are heretics!

Clever aliens. Pfft. They never existed! It's just dwellings of carnivorousness alien creatures looking like Meerkats nestled near an Auraxian relic, which humans have now discovered and marvelled at its benefits. Strange how that works like a crystalline drug to enhance the brain. Vanu Sovereignty is an extremist, fascist warped culture!
