The other day, I got an email from a friend of mine, asking me why all the hype over planetside. I gave him the link here, but he still didn't quite get it, so I drew him a picture:
Imagine, for a moment, a game set in a futuristic setting. Imagine a game where the real progress is made by you and your skill, rather then how many rats you've killed to earn the exp and money to buy the next uber item in your level range... Imagine, hoppng into a mosquito, and reaching a battle just before it commences... On one side, a defensive position has been taken around a key base, 30 tanks stand ready in front of it while the walls are lined with MAX staring down at the field before them. Over head 10-15 aircraft stand poised enage your assualt. Below you, an AMS setting up, ringed by MAX's and two columns of tanks stand ready for the commanders call, your wingman is offering advise how to wage the air war. The air is thick with anticipation of the upcomming battle. But before everything is in place, a small unit of stealthed defenders opens up on your sides AMS in a sneak attempt to end the fight before it begins... Al hell breaks out, the tanks surge forward, the MAX's are in a struggle to save the AMS, and before you can react, the enemy aircraft are on you, the battle has begun! Teh commander is scrambling to salvage tactical control of a quickly deteriorating situation.... its madness.... He kinda of got it at that point.

Gotta admit mr. Vic, that would be one hell of a battle man. one hell of a sick one. I would be there to participate in that one with my thresher at hand and bolt driver to take out a few opponents first. then I go in with my lasher and tear up the place. well I wish that atleast.

That's about 300 people per continent. 10 bases per continent, 10 towers per continent. On average, there is only going to be around 15 people per base/tower. 5 per faction. If a faction uses this many resourses to defend 1 base, my outfit is going to attack every base except this one... and rake in the real-estate. I think the scale you have in mind for this game is slightly exaggerated. It is going to be awesome though. No argument here. JRavey Station Member Registered: Nov 1997 posted 03-05-2003 09:48 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think a lot of people have high hopes for monster battles. Expect more of a LIC situation instead, lots of little skirmishes, dozens of small fights for every big fight. josebach Station Member Registered: Jan 2003 posted 03-05-2003 09:48 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- exactly MrVicchio Station Member Registered: Nov 2002 posted 03-05-2003 10:00 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OMG, I was setting up a classic stand off situation, The corolating of forces prior to a big hit, a mass battle... IT will happen, not all the time.. but occasioanlly two sides, outifts might get together off line perhaps.. or did you ever play DAoC? Most of the time, the battles were swift run ins.. but every now and then, you'd see one side line up, and gear up before hitting a well fortified position... I expect to see that occur occassionally in game. JRavey Station Member Registered: Nov 1997 posted 03-05-2003 10:15 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most of the time, the battles were swift run ins.. but every now and then, you'd see one side line up, and gear up before hitting a well fortified position... I expect to see that occur occassionally in game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's focus on the word "occasionally". I'm certain there will be some big fights, especially at key locations or areas with heavily travelled avenues of approach. I don't care if I get in one of those fights or not, I'm happier with frequent small fights than wandering for hours in search of a big fight. Hell, I don't sleep much, so I'll probably be riding around on my ATV in enemy occupied territory sniping guys at 2AM or something with an alt. rainbowmage Station Member Registered: Jan 2001 posted 03-05-2003 10:29 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I guarantee that some outfits will throw down the gauntlet, say they're going to take and hold one (or more) bases deep in enemy territory, then proceed to (attempt to) do just that... and that it'll get bloody. Sure, sometimes it'll be skirmishes, but sometimes battles will grow and grow as commanders just keep hollering for more reinforcements... ...too, you don't get as many BEPs in a low-target environment, don't forget. MrVicchio Station Member Registered: Nov 2002 posted 03-05-2003 11:10 AM user search report post -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the RPG PvP world, you saw organized forces on the weekends, but most of the time it was just groups of people going out to fight. GRANTED, this is a different enviroment, but I was just extrapolating what I have seen, and attempting to apply such to PS. Sure, most of the time, its not going to be so big or as organized as what I described, but remeber, I was trying to sell the game to a skeptical friend.. it worked he's all ready pre-paid for the game http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/p...ML/003493.html
