So it's the holidays and there's a lull in information and screenshots we're used to get from the generous devs of PS2. There's a lack of anything interesting so I thought I'd make this.
What are you most looking forward to in PS2? What are you most upset/skeptical about for it? And why? What am I looking forward to: Territory Control - Sounds amazing to me. I always hated how you had these vast continents to fight over in Planetside 1, yet over half the battles took place in these narrow claustrophobic bases/tower stairwells. It got really old fast. If you've been in one interfarm you've been in them all. My favorite aspect was fighting outside in the fields of the game through ground combat. Now with the territory control it seems like we'll be fighting over more outdoor environments, rather than crappy corridor bases/towers. Resources - It's a new incentive to fight. Fighting over bases and benefits that are passive and give no real advantage was just stupid. So you own Ishundar after hours of fighting. So what? It will just be taken the next day and you'll lose the benefit. Now with resources, you need to really fight for territory in order to get those high yield resources. Spending hours holding off at base could actually mean something this time around. In all honesty, these are the only real two aspects that I'm excited for in PS2. What I'm not looking forward to: Class System - The removal of the certifcation system still irks me. In PS1, your certs defined your role, and your ability to mix and match certs could yield some really interesting combinations. A cloaker with Adv. Med could invisibly revive fallen allies. Or you could have CE and Uni-MAX to be a strong defender. Etc. Now it seems they've thrown away that whole concept. It's no longer about playing a character you want to be, you just pick a class when you respawn. Now I understand that classes obviously make you choose a role. But they're interchangeable at anytime, as long as there's a equipment terminal, or so I've heard. It just really removes a lot of depth for me and replaces it with far too much simplicity to appeal to the casual crowd/CoD/BF audience. No Custom Inventories - Again, removes a lot of the depth of the game. A smart and cunning player would come up with clever load outs and effectively manage his inventory to be really effective. Vice versa, if you came up with an idiotic loadout you'd most likely get your ass handed to you. All gold ammo anyone? There was obvious reward and a whole lot of depth to inventories. It really pains me to see them go, just so the game can cater to more casual players. Skill Tree - I'm necessarily against this one, but I'm more skeptical. I'm personally not a huge fan of skill trees. They start out innocent and fun, but eventually along the line someone finds out the "l33t" build and everyone will follow suit. Another thing...One of the biggest downfalls of the original PS was the adding of too many cert points. BR 20 limited you perfectly in your role. BR 23 gave a little more flexibility but still kept your role limited. Then BR 40 shit on the whole thing and entirely ruined the concept. Since we'll be able to max out our skill trees for various weapons, armors and vehicles. Could we potentially have EVERY skill tree maxed out given enough time? And ANOTHER thing. I'm really not fond of not everyone being on even grounds. The beauty of the original PS was that a level 1 could kill a level 40. Everyone was even, nobodies weapon was stronger or more accurate because they specced into it. And if someone says that specing into a weapon will barely increase it's efficiency, then what the fuck is the point of speccing into a weapon if there is no increase in performance at all. Just sounds like an added shitty element to appease the MMORPG crowd. Obviously, there's a lot more dislikes than likes for the game to me. But that's because I'm skeptical for a game I love. I'm not just going to blindly love and welcome the game in open arms. I'm going to be judgmental and harsh on everything I hear and question it. I have a horrible inkling that this game will not be at all how I want it to be. I really don't want to be another generic shooter with the MMO niche to it. So what are you looking/not looking forward to for PS2? |

the only thing I have heard so far that bothers me is the tank gunner/driver set up.
I figure that i don't know enough to start wildly speculating about what is in or out of the game until the beta,I leave that to the rest of the 'experts' around here |

I am eager to hear more on gameplay and specifics but honestly I cannot wait to see more of Planetside 2's new graphics. These screenshots have been amazing. Let's just hope the game has the depth and playability that is equal to that of Planetside 1. In 9 years, I have yet to find a game that could beat PS1s total game experience. I hope PS2 continues this legacy.
The Free to play game model scares me a little. But I'll wait and see before I rant and rave. |

What I'm not looking forward to:
1. I really wanted the devs to create separate weapon and vehicle models for each empire. For example the Vanu's liberator would look different than the NC's. Of course they would have the same stats and vehicle sizes would be similar amongst the empires. 2. Along the same lines as 1. Only 2 empire specific vehicles per faction? It seems like they really want to make playing each empire feel different yet they ignore the best way of doing so; empire specific vehicles and weapons. 3. No vehicle hacking. I fully understand the reasons for this but I am going to miss it. Some of my best memories of Planetside were hacking a vehicle under the enemies nose and driving it out of the base with the driver chasing after me. What I'm looking forward to: 1. Everything else. Seriously the game is looking amazing and most of the major changes seem perfect. The class system is actually going to create more diversity than it kills. We'll finally get rid of the rexo/ha/av/eng/med clone. (As cutterjohn pointed out) 90% of battles will no longer take place in towers. I could go on and on. |

On a serious note.. I'm really looking for just about all of it I'm not really concerned about the things that have gone away until I've seen it. On one hand I miss the free inventory, on the other hand it was quite clumsy and IMO annoying as a fairly new player. Many people will have the issue especially once PS2 is live that they just remember the good things about PS and not the bad things, as in look it through rose tinted nostalgy glasses. PS had a crap ton of problem, but it was still amazing and unique. Change isn't always bad. AMS going away feels weird, but there could be an equivalent we don't know about yet. My biggest gripe by far is the ragged ass hobo-look of NC. With the big corporate CEOs and even hired mercenaries, I'd figure someone would have money for proper gear? WTB less worn out gear from cash shop

A tank that needs a driver and a gunner produces 15 tanks for a platoon A tank that needs a driver to gun produces 30 tanks for a platoon. |

Im looking for:
Territories Better command system (command certs, missions) Huge bases Classes (for bringing variety) I fear: F2P (with all bad what it brings) DriverGunners Squad spawning "faster" combat Classes (for limiting preferable playstyles, like med+eng; for allowing everyone do everything) |

I'm dubious of the whole tank drivergunner thing, why would people use MAX suits outdoors when you could just Vanguard crash? Plus I liked the teamwork of driver and gunner communicating and working together yet separately.
As ThirdCross said, 2 unique vehicles per empire? basically meaning MBT and Air Cav I assume. Seems a little light on the unique side of things. Though I expect this number will rise sharply after launch. Removal of AMS and the feel of supply lines.. but we don't know much about this, equivalent blah blah. So I am reserving judgement on this, just a little nervous. As for things I'm looking forward to.. Big bases, Better gunplay, Amazing graphics/physics, Weapon customization, Sandbox nature, Territories system, Flight physics, Et cetera. PS2 will be great, I have no doubt. |
