Put this together while I work on my tactics and strategy site, thought I would share it and get some feedback. This is Desolation so is apparently smaller than the average PS2 continent (just saving me some work).
Few questions to you guys:

Yeah... I think the size of the bases will be a lot larger. So that will drive the size of the hexes up considerably.
But it's hard to know for sure without some more information. I'm really interested to hear more about the hex system. It is probably one of the biggest features added to Planetside 2. |

I have updated it to have thinner lines between the hexes to make it more transparent overall and less busy, which makes it easier to look at. I'll upload the latest version soon. |

Looks good in scale, but to me it would seem that number of hexes would be enough for a continent the size of Ishundar (which also seems similar in size to Indar to me).
Also, I would imagine that the 6 hexes a base and 2-3 hexes a tower occupies would be lumped together into a single block a la Global Agenda style, so they'd be captured all at once.

However, I think the bases and towers would be designed to each be pretty symmetrical and at the center of things: bases take up 7 hexes, towers three each, with bases' center being the that central 7th hex, while the towers are at the intersection of 3 hexes. Something like this: (The base, and the TR and VS warpgates don't quite line up cos I started in the top right corner, but you get the idea.) Here's a side effect of the hex grid we haven't considered: the map will now have 3 dimensions (the three lines you see above).

An image I edited a while ago, it can be seen in my albums:
This is a real PS2 map (with a small amount of editing): I give you Indar! It looks to me as if we have 3 warp gates per cont (1 per empire), and clusters of 3 other bases around them gates. This map is much more populated that it seems. There are many structure on this map. Loads of hexes to capture I do believe the bottom right is concealing a warp gate as we can only see 2. You will see in the next image an idea of where I think the 3rd warp gate is: And another image showing the clusters of the 3 empires (in theory) The smaller green dots look to me like buildings: Last edited by SuperMorto; 2012-01-03 at 02:46 PM. |
