While I most certainly enjoy most genres, I get more excited about resource gathering, base management and ordering troops around than shooting people in the face. So what could an RTS player bring to Planetside 2?
With resources playing a role in PS2 do you think it will get strategy fans excited? Being able to go down the Commander line of CERTS, directing players to the rare resources and making sure their empire is as efficient as possible. How important are resources going to be? Are we going to need them to purchase vehicles? Weapons? Ammo and medical supplies? Will it be possible to win a battle by simply starving the other side of resources? |

Besides that, nothing is know. I guess thats it for ressources for the beginning, with more stuff coming later after release. But, to get down on your question: You bring a lot, and also get a lot. As a RTS player, you most likley have a better understanding about tactics than most people do. You See a situation, and right away see ways to advance, rather than ways to get yourself kills. And once you got used to leading a herd of Lolcats on fire (players), understand how exactly stuff plays out in a FPS, and got yourself a name as a good commander, you would also get a lot out of PS2. Trust me, i know what im talking about. Once random people add you to their friends list, and /t you the moment you log on, you know you dont ever want to stop playing again. |

@Basti I got that a lot in Warhammer Online. I got into that for the keep sieges and every night I'd run groups of 40-60 people. Whenever I logged in I'd get people sending me tells going, "So when is the group starting?" For a while now I've been waiting a long time for some kind of MMO to resemble either DAOC or Planetside. I played a lot of Battlefield 2 and 2142 and I really enjoyed being a squad leader or commander in those games. Loved having a well coordinated squad or squads to lead. It will be interesting to see how the commander role plays out in PS2. |

Not nessesarily. But you want to take a good look around you and look for a proper outfit for ya. Leading the zerg sometimes is extremly effective, but often you end up being unable to pull off some rather complicated tactics because the zerg is 2 slow (as said, lolcats on fire), or doesnt understand what you try to do. Having a proper, strong outfit then helps a ton, because if the zerg doesnt follow a commander, it follows the outfits.

I remember a few people joining our outfit and then immediately asking to be able to lead the platoon, short answer is 'no'. Longer answer is 'why should we trust you to lead properly. We don't know you, you don't know us, and because of that it can only end one way.'. If anyone wants to lead, join an outfit, lead the outfit platoon, show you have learnt the strategies and tactics of the game and by that become trusted and gain something of a reputation. It's similar for global or continental leaders. People will follow those who are trusted and those who they know and it you have an effective outfit to back you up, then there is more power to your elbow, so to speak. There are a few people who did make an exceptional reputation for themselves in leading. On Werner VS Enrico, on Werner TR Ostecake, on Werner NC ... I don't know Jolly? These people actually could 'zerg herd' as the saying goes. |

Inter outfit co-op was the only way to lead the NC after spring 2004 on werner at least.
We had the NCWA which was a massive outfit alliance, using a huge ts server we would launch 170player gall drop, tanks zergs and lib runs. Problem was we could only do it once a week for a couple of hours and it was a massive headache to co-oridinate so many outfits. |

In Planetside 1 it provided rage mostly, your influence was easily ignored and Combat Engineering was probably about as far as you could go in base management.
We don't know what kind of base management might be possible in Planetside 2 yet but we do know that you will be able to make missions (which will be a more concrete way of leading troops than hoping they read your orders to get off Cyssor) and that other perks will become available in leadership specialization. I don't think it will be something that you'd need to be devoted to full time. You might have just as much if not more fighting yourself as there is leading. |
