They did PCGamer for PS1 (got it buried in some attic somewhere at home), not that much different so far in my opinion. Maybe it will change when Beta starts, there's so much more options now than in 2003.

Pcgamer as has already been said did feature planetside back in 2003 and the devs visited LAN parties around the world. They even went as far as paying for BT to install a 100mbit connection to newbury racecourse to demo the game and so people good play at the UK's largest LAN parties.
Planetside had plenty of initial promotion but nothing on going. Planetside 2 has got to this level and in my opinion surpassed it with social media (facebook page has some 30,000 followers) then there are the existing fanbase and now with the pcgamer beta its pushing hard. I have confidence that the game should get around 1million people (atleast) try it within the first 12months. |

i saw no advertising for ps1 (in germany) at all.
the pc gamer was and is not available here and i only came to the game because i saw a weird banner on the star wars galaxy site and clicked it. i even had problems to find a store that sold the game. now with ps2 soe seems to have some serious marketing plans. as bad as the evil pro7 deal seems to be, it IS a big sign, that soe actually wants to do something in europe this time as well. after all pro7 has tv channels and they advertise their gaming portal and the particular games included there every day in almost every adblock on their channels! so ps2 will get tv ads! ever seen a single tv ad for ps1?

I remember a Planetside preview is the UK mag PCZone which is no longer being published. I don't think poor marketing was it's downfall. Hardware/Internet restrictions and a slow mmo market at the time were all contributing.
The entire world is now a lot more turned on to online gaming that it used to be. Markets are splitting at the seams with new players of all different ages. |

This is of no surprise to me. I don't know what people are worried about, PS1 was an experiment that turned out to be a pleasant surprise and the discovery of a new niche in gaming.
PS2 is a very ambitious project. SOE has taken everything they learned from PS1 and are developing a huge project. This isn't just another game, it's a movement into the future.

Guys what are you guys smoking. There have been almost no Advertising for this game so far. wow a a couple of PC gamer articles. (Not a lot of people even read those types of magazines anymore)
This is the same exact route they went with planetside 1. They need to step it up. Damn That stupid Free 2 Play Game "Crossfire" Has more ads around the web then any stupid shooter i know. |

I remember when I found out about planetside when a friend of mine in DAOC mentioned the beta. I was pleasantly surprised at what I found.
1) SOE is placing its full commitment to it (they need this game to succeed more than most people realize) 2) The technology of today is WAY ahead of where it was in 2003 and it can now properly support something as ambitious as PS2. 3) And of course... PS2 is becoming more well known more quickly than PS1 ever did. And this is very very heartening to see- I think we all want this game to take off. On a side note: I totally agree, MMOFPS and MMORTS (Strategy) games are the two "unexplored" areas of online gaming that developers should pursue more often.
