Folks,
Our memory optimizations continue, but we can currently (and easily) run the game on 32MB video cards and only 256MB of system RAM.

Thus, we're officially lowering our minimum system specs.

NOTE: "Minimum spec" means you'll need to run with lower-resolution textures (they look blurrier in the game), but the models all still look great, the terrain is good, the sky still shows, etc. In otherwords, it's not as crisp as you can do at "Recommended spec"...but it's still pretty cool looking.

ALSO NOTE: A complete list of supported video cards will be posted at a date closer to release.

Here's the specs:

Minimum Specs:
Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium II 1.0 Mhz or greater
256 MB RAM
Direct3D compliant video card with 32MB RAM
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
56k+ Internet connection
4X speed CD-ROM
2.0 GB hard drive space
DirectX 8.1 or greater

Recommended Specs:
Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium III 1.6 Mhz or greater
512 MB RAM
Direct3D compliant video card with 64MB+ RAM
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Broadband Internet connection
8X speed CD-ROM
2.0 GB hard drive space
DirectX 8.1 or greater

Umm.... Performance improvements usually come -at- the end of beta. That's usually the only time that they -can- make them.

No...as a systems analyst for the software company I work for, I know that major performance changes can occur just about anywhere in the development cycle.

As any good software engineer knows, you should always keep an eye out for performance issues during the design phase. You try to avoid problems before you code them...

True, but the reality - in my software QA experience - is that the most attention to optimization tends to come near the end, after all the functionality is in and tested.

This is understandable, as why spend a large amount of time optimizing something, only to have to toss it out because the spec/requirements changed?

It IS better to optimize earlier via better planning, but what's best often isn't what really happens most often, sadly.

I was just about to upgrade my graphics card to a Geforce4 4600 when..guess what..my cumputer has NO AGP slot. nada, its right there, its got a slot for where it should be and everything, but it isn't there.

GOD DAMN YOU GATEWAY!!!!!!! *falls to knees crying
*camera zooms out*
If you have ever felt like this please call 1-800-I-AM-SADD

how much to have an AGP slot put onto your mother board?

Sadly, it's not that easy. You'll have to get a new mobo, which takes a whole lot of work if you don't know what you're doing (actually, if you don't know what you're doing, you'll probably totally screw your computer ) I'm surprised that gateway actually makes computers without AGP slots though, when did you get it?

1.0MHz PII and a 1.6MHz PIII ? well I've only worked with hardware since 1994 so I might have missed something

Think SJ needs a little hardware curse

J/K SJ, keep up the good work and give the devs a pad on the back for the great code optimizing
