Planetside Community Awards Idea. Looking for feedback?

This is just a copy and paste from my original post on Reddit. here http://www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/c...your_thoughts/

Hi all,

Recently I was thinking. What can be done to make the Planetside community even bigger, better and more established?

The way I see it is the community is small, very small. Not only due to the fact Planetside is so old, but also due to the fact of the kind of game it is. There isn't many community projects in a persistent world FPS MMO that we can all come together and enjoy. We can talk tactics and share a few videos, ideas and pictures. The main bulk of the active community is the outfits. And they tend to be very quiet about what they do outside of the game.

So my idea is this. To further strengthen the Planetside community I suggest that my site (witch will remain unnamed because I don't want this to be seen as an advertisement booo!!) will host some awards for community ideas, things that make the community and the game more established. Of course we can have some prizes for the winners.

Ideas on prizes?

Of course it will be up to the community to decide and not myself or any folks from my site. So any projects submitted will be added to the list and then the community can vote.

I really do believe the current PS community can become something far bigger. And offer more to the gamers, and offer more in the ways of entertainment (no I don't mean eSports). Currently there quite a few projects and big/small outfits out there that need some exposure. These are the backbone of the PS community outside of the game. I think bringing them all together and giving them all more exposure will take the community to the next level.

Feedback please?

Morto.

PS. The PS player base is about to get a whole lot bigger, I think we should prepare the community for it. And make the whole experience what it should of been first time round!

I don't know if we are talking about the same thing but I have two thoughts here:

One, is that we really need to get the word of mouth going. Tell your friends, go into MMOs and tell general chat(Even SOE MMOs, believe it not, my most desired gaming routine is to play my MMORPG for 3-4 hours at night then finish up with an hour or 2 of FPSing).

Two, is to really focus on community aspects. What outfit features there are and how most FPS games have zilch for this. Lots of people wanted Battlefield to have official in-game clans like guilds but it doesn't have it. PS2 will.

Of course the word of mouth thing might be easier after E3. Telling people I know about the game right now leads to too many questions that we can't currently answer.

You have to remember there will more than likely be a big media push when the game does come out. There will be reviews, articles, videos, you name it. Let's also hope that the game will be put onto Steam. I wouldn't worry about the popularity of PS2 just yet..so keep on doing what you're doing.

Did something somewhat like this recently at my uni where we awarded staff (both academic and non-academic) who had gone the "extra mile" so to speak.

I was involved with the judging and there were a few things that could be useful learnings for such a project:
  1. Winners should be picked on the quality of nominations, not on the number of nominations/votes
  2. You should have clearly defined categories that make clear the criteria nominees are judged upon
  3. Be prepared to have/create new categories for nominations that fall out of the scope of what you came up with

I'd be cautious about saying about rewarding people for making the community "bigger, better and more established" but rather just simply to reward those who do awesome things for the community (big or small) for altruistic reasons.

That said if your idea is to highlight things happening in the community you'd do better possibly doing a community feature, akin to the outfit highlight on PSU, every so often.

That's why I gave the small outfits a mention. Just anything cool for the community is where I'm going with this.

But it seems this idea has already been thought of.

Referring to the post on Reddit I take it? Perhaps you should talk to EP about getting involved, I'm sure he'd be okay if you wanted to get involved.

Well, doesn't hurt to ask.

It's going to be like the discovery of America. Picture the gaming world as a map. We are like the native Americans and everyone is going to be flooding to here.

Shall be awesome.

That graphic novel project has gotten me interested in writing some shorts stories on some Planetside stuff. Might have to do that in the future.

I think the Native Americans might view it differently than a blanket "awesome". =D But that's history...

If you're interested in doing some writing as a TR player I've got a project running over at Terran-Republic.com that you might find interesting.
http://terran-republic.com/forum/thr...sign-phase.44/

The project is in its early phase as I'm intentionally stalling its implementation for the proper moment, but it's certainly happening. Feel free to comment there are hit me up on T-R or PSU to talk about it if you want to work on the project!

---

Back on point to the OP, I imagine that PSU and/or PSU-Stats' teams are in the best position to do this sort of thing as a neutral, central voice in the Planetside community. SuperMorto, let's chat this up sometime- I'm very busy right now, but there's definitely some big sparks to this idea.

This looks more like morto trying to make himself significant, not about community improvement.

Prizes or contest won't strengthen a community; having a game to play will.

Don't think of it like a prize or a contest. That's the complete opposite idea of what is trying to be accomplished here. It's for recognition of putting a lot of effort into building the PS2 community and/or spreading word-of-mouth about the game. The way EP has his set up doesn't make any mention of the 666th either, it's an award from the community to a valuable community member.

I dunno. I think the reward for doing something cool and useful is seeing people use and enjoy it. As far as my site is concerned, if people visit and find it valuable etc - then that's the justification for it existing; and the more people buy into the idea - the more time I'll feel like spending on improving it.

My own reasons for building it are because I have looked forward to PS2 since it was announced, I enjoy mucking around with stats and game data, and because I can. I want to learn mobile development so its a good way to be able to have a useful project to work on, and I take on web development projects from paying clients - so having cool sites in the portfolio to show off makes it easier to attract them.
