At 2K you're in the sweet spot to buy the best computer:
Geforce 670 GTX: 400 USD Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz: 350 USD Leaves you with 1250 to buy the other stuff...

For off lets start with the monitor. You have a good budget, so we need to get you a good one. Are you interested in high resolution, IPS, or 120 Hz. Depending on where we go from here will determine what kind of computer we will make for you.
I wouldn't worry about hex cores at the moment. Out of the price range unless you looking to spend more then are already are if you still want a decent gaming rig with all the bells and whistles. You may benefit from a i7 though. This monitor for $300 has been a hit recently among many. 2560x1440 and IPS. EDIT: Well I came up with a build for that monitor. Went over $2000, but it doesn't include speakers, KB, or a mouse. Maybe we can work with something if you are interested in doing something like this. Even doing a single 670 and adding it later when you have more funds. Sorry I went a bit overboard... Here it is. From Newegg: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB HDD - $109.99 MSI GTX 670 (2) -$800 LITE-ON Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive - $18.99 CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX 750W PSU - $110 G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 - $38.99 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM - $99.99 Crucial M4 128GB SSD - $124.99 SilverStone RAVEN RV02-BW - $169.99 From Micro Ccenter: 3570K - $190 ASUS P8Z77-V - $150 w/ combo discount Total = $2149

In all honestly 1920x1080 is perfect for me.As well I'm not really worried about a hex core now, but down the line in a couple of years or so I would like to upgrade to one. What about the Sandy Bridge E platform? Can upgrade the cpu to a 3930k or 3960x later down the line. It also has the quad channel memory I was looking for as I will be doing about the same if not more video editing than gaming. Would I see a advantage going that way?

Alright thats fine. Just wanted to show you what was possible. Have you looked into the 120Hz vs IPS screens at all? Please do so. 120Hz adding to the gaming experience due to showing more frames (60 FPS with 60Hz vs 120 FPS with 120Hz). IPS adds huge amounts of color accuracy over a TN panel, which will benefit you with photoshop depending on your actual use with it (like photo editing).
SB-E I don't see worth the cost. Even with the quad channel. Going with a 3820 now and getting a 3930K down the road isn't a smart idea. Even a year or two down the road you would be better off just upgrading the entire system. You will however benefit from having HT, so your best course of action is to go with a 3770K. We can also load up you with 16GB of RAM too. I will get a build together for you today. Please look into the type of monitor you want. Resolution isn't everything these days. Concerning speakers. TBH I am not that experienced with this topic. Feel free to ask a bit more about them here of course, someone else may.

Ah ok wanted your thoughts on Sandy Bridge E. Also I've heard that Ivy Bridge runs hotter than Sandy Bridge so most likely gonna need a after market cooler.Have you had any experience with liquid cooling? I was looking at this as a choice as I've heard it is suppose to run much quieter while keeping the cpu cool. Also is there really any difference between a MSI 670 and a Evga 670? Onto speakers. I know with a sound card most speakers would benefit for that. Is there any way you can squeeze one in.If its not good than no problem.

For IPS monitors if you want to look into reviews check the Dell U2311, U2412M, HP ZR24W are the ones that come off the top of my head as good IPS monitors. 120Hz there is the Planar SA2311W, and ASUS VG236H.
There is no differences as far as I know between the MSI and EVGA 670. I think you can, but lets see what will happen once I get it setup. For a KB and mouse. Are there any brands you prefer? Are you looking for a gaming keyboard and mouse? I like gaming mice, but never found gaming keyboards as being worth the huge premium over a $20 one at Walmart. Is a 1TB HDD big enough for you or do you need more? About the CPU cooler. Don't bother with that Thermaltake one. Really if you are interested in ones like that the Corsair H80 is your best bet. But thats pretty expensive. If you have room in the budget go for it, but I know of a few air coolers that are cheaper which you would be better off with. Ok here is what I came up with so far. Includes everything but, a case, sound card, and speakers. I highly suggest getting the GTX 670 now before it sells out. Even if you are a week or two away from ordering. SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB - $89.99 MSI GTX 670 - $399.99 SONY Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive - $19.99 PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 600W - $89.99 Logitech K120 Black USB Wired Standard Keyboard - $13.99 Logitech G500 Gaming Mouse - $57.99 G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600MHz - $92.99 ASUS P8Z77-V LK - $149.99 Intel Core i7 3770K - $349.99 (Out of stock) Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit OEM - $99.99 Crucial M4 128GB SSD - $124.99 Total = $1,519.88 Leaves $480 for everything else. I may have to go through and do some trimming depending on what monitor you are looking at getting.

I'd go for the IPS panel unless you plan on watching 24p movies on the monitor or doing 3d gaming. With the comp.
You can't see 60fps any better than you can see 120fps. The only time people can tell is when the video source frame rate and monitor refresh rates get muddled up. Have a look at these speakers: I can't recommend them any higher. At $150 you aren't getting better sound quality. If you want surround sound, you will need to look elsewhere, but they pretty much kick the ass of any 2.1 multimedia system. They are a bit large for a crowded desk, though. (I'm a big music listener so I care more about the accuracy and depth than the absolute power...if you really need room shaking bass, a 2.1 might be for you...a high end logitec is probably the way to go for that) So add $300 to for a monitor and you've got some money left. You might think about putting a sound card...or bumping to a bigger SSD? I've got no clue about sound cards these days. I have a X-fi PCI Express as a carry over from an earlier build.

The real issue are the artifacts presented like judder or the framerate mismatch between 24p video and a 60hz monitor.

It's old, but it still seems applicable. Now, if gaming consisted solely of consciously being able to tell the difference between alternating colours, I might agree with you. Edit: Also this, which even addresses your black/white frames test. Last edited by Vancha; 2012-05-12 at 05:33 PM. |

There's not much point to using all that money now. He's better off saving it for an upgrade down the line.
