What amd cpu to get ??

Hey,
so i have a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor (4 CPUs) 3GHZ I have been told that an 8 core cpu would be bad for planetside 2 ?? I want to get a more powerful CPU but i am unsure what one does anyone have any suggestions please ? Thanks

Your current processor should me more then capable of running current games. I wouldn't advise getting a FX processor either. What do you even have for a GPU currently?

I would advise against a FX chip as well. Since you have an AM3 chip you probably have a AM3 mobo (just guessing). FX chips would require a AM3+ board IIRC.

If you wanted to upgrade I would suggest getting an i5.

I myself have a AMD 970BE, and am not planning to upgrade for PS2.

As Goku asked.. What GPU do you have? Depending on what you have, you might see more of a performance increase by upgrading the GPU and not CPU.

Correct, but the newer AMD CPUs wouldn't be much/any of an improvement and might not even run on your motherboard.

Basically, your CPU should be fine for now, but once it needs upgrading you'll need a new motherboard, too.

You would probably be looking at $300-$350 depending on what type of motherboard and processor you want.

I have a Phenom II X4 955 BE myself, and have no plans to upgrade it for PS2. It should be quite sufficient to run it at least at launch. Wouldn't worry about running PS2 with your hardware at all, though. The 580 will be perfectly adequate to run PS2.

good decision, the fx would actually give less or only equal performance to what you already have as they just aint very good gaming parts. there passable for rendering and video conversion but they really do suck at gaming...
im not kidding when i say this either. i see at least 10 posts a week over at toms from fx users saying why are my fps so low, my system is high end and then they say they have a fx4100/6100 or 8120 paired with a 560ti or better.
they are particularly struggling with games like bf3, deus ex HR, and crysis 2...
all games that supposedly require only a dual core to work but really need a decent fast quad...
yours is a decent fast quad so no need to upgrade unless you go for a 960t and try to unlock it... then you would have a high end fx beater.

in regards to performance per buck its quite a bit more... not a huge amount in reality but if your paying for performance you want bang for buck and the 960t has it especially if unlocked... it is pretty much the best gaming cpu amd offer atm. if the 110t was i would have recommended that but because the potential of the 960t in comparison is so high i think its a better deal.
