Sorry for the mistyped title.... can't edit it...
So we have these massive continents and with a new capture system that will allow every inch of map to be contestable. Awesome!!!! We also have no sanctuaries but instead each empire gets a non contestable warp gate on each continent. My question is wouldn't this really limit the area people fight on? I mean it seems like fighting next to another factions warp gate would rarely happen. Instead it would just end up in a big" peace sign" like pattern of front lines on the map fighting over the same general areas. This can't be the case so what am I missing? You're missing the part where the NC drive those sorry bastages back into their warp gates and kill them every time they step out.
Oh yea, that's DEFINATELY how it's gonna happen! But seriously, as populations eb and flow, ground will be gained and lost. There may be times when one empire drives another back to their gate, but it won't last. I'm actually excited about the new system because now the continents will always be open to go fight on. I know I'll have my favorite (Amerish) but I can always go to the others to mix it up. THIS IS A GOOD THING. |

There have been a few proposals to fix this problem, this was mine.

Seems to me like we are going to be a bit more spread out in PS2. The Hex system combined with the much larger numbers mean that there will probably be a fight for every facility where two colors are touching. Also I think there are many smaller facilities other than the bases spread out around the map. So expect long battle lines instead of the go to a base and surround it that we got from PS1.

From one of my old post
"And here is where ps1 and ps2 difference will kick in, we can compare ps1 with blitzgrieg, fast attack outfits using veicles to move, infantry fights mainly indoors , the distances are quite big so walkings is not a good option now lets see ps2. There is less space beetween facilities(or better to say there are a lot more facilities); a lot more players, vehicles cost resources to fight for, soo they are not spammeable for trasport(exept the flash); it is easy to walk/advance from one outpost to another. YOu got also the hexagon rule(time cap determined by how many confinant zones you have) that means behind lines cap realy hard plus the tablet/pc app to monitor ingame will tell them when and where you are coming, less surprise effect + fast response. Less ttk, more spawn . I call this a POSITION WAR just like ww1. They just want us to trowh ourself in a gigantic battle like lemmings. Have you saw the entrance to NC territory from Vs? it is a 100 m road uphill with full obstacles in the way(and no facility near). They meant the game to make us fight each meter we advance! Take also in cosideration they are enfatizing a lot the scale of the conflit soo they benefit if we all fight in the same places Other way they are pushing us to fight in the same place is that your faction terrain is realy defendible: TR-Canyons to spray soo you have to walk into their fire wall NC-Got a lot of obstacles to hide will recharging, plus highterrain soo their accuracy wins. Vs- In their desert emptyness their no bullet drop will get you sniped miles away and their uber agile vehicles will rule over the others. Soo in poor words we will all end up in a gigantic front, hoping that it wont end up like a trench war EDit: The reason of the foothold: foothold exist because if you loose the continent it will, be near impossible with the game rules like now to regain it, the enemy not only play in defense, knows from where you come, when you are coming, and has 1/6 of the time you got for recapturing, I call that imposible. The irony will end up being that they removed faction sanctuaries just to add them again in orbit...That may prove to be a wise decision in the short term, but if there are three warpgate sanctuaries on every continent, you might as well change the name of the game to "Continent-Side", as a lack of neutral warpgates just solidifies continents into glorified instances.
In the long term what I'd like to see is all of the continents in one instance on the ocean on an actual globe under the oversight of an orbital sanctuary. This would mesh them together in terms of strategic gameplay, and would introduce a bona fide strategic reason for naval units. I know that's beyond possible at this point, but when it comes time to sandbox into interstellar travel, no single thing will make the world of Planetside more believable or immersive. Isn't this kind of like saying that you could never take over a home cont in old PS1 because the defending Empire could always pull tech from Sanc? I think its certainly something that needs to be played out first, before we start declaring fixes to the 'problem.'

I think that, if the battlefronts are as long as they should be, and there are as many bases and mini-bases spread out throughout the terrain, that the battlefronts should be shifting quite a bit. I don't imagine that we'll ever see the territory near Sanctuaries leave the possession of their respective empires. But hey, time will tell the tale. PS1 had full continent locks so things might go crazy in its fluctuations (and I hope it does).
People still like to throw out conjecture and speculations. I think it's just important to the people here (and the devs especially) that an understanding is made that what we think the game will be like isn't necessarily true, and even what is actually there will likely not be there in its current form as beta progresses. Mostly I think people just don't want anyone to come here and think what the game is now is what the game will necessarily be if players don't feel works. |

There was a thread started a while back that asked the question, how big is PS2 maps compared to PS1 maps. I'm sorry but I don't remember the outcome of the discussion. But if you do some searching you might find it. The size difference wasn't that much if I remember right though. Anyways, this topic scares me cause I also fear scale will somehow be affected crossing into PS2...
