Who uses rifles?

I'm a bit confused about weapons and classes. Light Assault, Medic, and Engineer use smgs/shotguns/carbines, Infiltrator can use smgs/carbines/shotguns/sniper rifles, Heavy Assault uses machine guns and rocket launchers; who exactly can equip assault rifles (say, the Cycler)?

Pretty sure HA uses LMGs; cycler ARV instead of cycler, and so on.

Yes i just forgot the ARV ok, the Engie will use carabines not rifles,

Just in case can someone confirm me the difference beetwen caribine and rifle?

That'd make sense, though it does feel a bit odd that there's no standard infantry class (in the sense of Medium Assault in PS1).

Technically, the only difference is that carbines are shorter. In the real world, they're typically shortened version of full rifles which fire the same ammunition, but at a lower velocity and with less accuracy. They typically are used for urban combat where the long barrel of a rifle would make it difficult to manuver and aim quickly.

Its the length of the barrel. Both will fire the same caliber rounds but carbines have a shorter barrel and trade portability for long range accuracy. This is because the shorter barrel doesn't put enough of a spin on the bullet to maintain accuracy over a longer distance.

The M4 is the carbine version of the M16, by the by.

(I think that both the light assault and heavy assault are meant to be standard infantry classes, just differently focused for players who prefer different playstyles or who want to take a different approach at that time)

Honestly, if they differentiate enough between the Cycler ARV and the Cycler rifle (and between the Cycler rifle and the Cycler carbine) I'd happily pick up a rifle for Heavy Assault. I've never liked using an LMG in shooters.

I've always gone for the trusty Assault Rifle, preferably one that can shoot a good amount of bullets while still maintaining damage, (I usually used the base assault rifle rather than the Voss or the... Baur, I think, in 2142) so I'm going to spec into assault rifles and see if I can't get a bit more damage at the cost of fire rate. Not too much, though.

Also, just throwing this out there, did any class other than the MAX use anything other than variants on a single weapon (Carbine, LMG, Sniper Rifle, etc.) in the E3 demo? We've yet to see shotguns, battle rifles, assault rifles, and... dang, I can't even remember what else is supposed to be in the game. There's too much stuff!

I just really hope there is a noticeable difference between the carbine and the assault rifle at range. Close range they should be fairly similar?

Define better the difference between battle rifles and AR ones, we didnt saw any shoutgun yet, but for the before mentioned i think the 3 models + the 6 different scopes (they were six no?) plus the other 6 costumization (like the one to lower recoil) will give you all the gamma of products you can imagine.

As far as I know the "battle rifles" or whatever the hell they are (we haven't seen them yet, after all) are something the Infiltrator can take rather than a sniper rifle. I remember someone mentioning them in an interview or something (maybe it was that weaponry webcast or something from a while back, I think that's what it was).

It basically traded their long range fighting abilities for better midrange, or something. I had a vague idea of them being powerful but semi-automatic, but I don't know if that's true.

Gah, I can't even find the weaponry webcast. Anyone else remember anything like battle rifles?

A battle rifle these days tends to mean a higher caliber assault rifle.

Think M14 or G3 or FAL vs M16.

Battle rifles are supposed to be more powerful and accurate, but worse for close-range combat (than assault rifles).
