Hit and run.

Does running over people do damage to your vehicle? I would think running into a Max or even an HA should do some damage to the vehicle. How did this work in PS1 ?

a main battle tank is 60+ tons of armor, strike plates and mesh.

No, running shit over doesn't scratch them. Shit , running over small bombs doesn't scratch them.

In PS1 there were some odd physics that caused the vehicle to sometimes sustain heavy damage from hitting infantry even at very low speeds.

However, I do not think that a vehicle should be damaged from hitting a non-vehicle. Except maybe ATVs against MAX units.

In one of the E3 vids a guy ran over a MAX in the Mag and it didnt look like there was damage. So id say no. Then again if you touched a cactus you exploded. But ya in PS1 it didnt either from what i remember.

What about the lighter vehicles ?, what happens if the flash hits a MAX. Does it throw the rider off ? I can understand the Tanks but there will be buggies at a later time like the Enforcer and such and I was just wondering if the details went that deep.

That's just a rock , paper, scissors thing, the cactus is the tanks natural predator.

I would imagine tanks not really being scratched from hitting a MAX. What would a MAX even weigh? Consider even WWII era tanks could ram through buildings, and tank-ramming was utilized as a tactic against Tigers in the russian front in WWII... I'd say that tanks should not take damage from hitting things :P

With the ATVs I'd say the MAX would still be the losing end. Considering the force of an impact is velocity multiplied by mass, the ATV probably weighs enough. Obviously it would also destroy the ATV I think.

Considering ATVs purely from a gameplay perspective though, I'm not quite sure though.

That would be Gran Theft Auto: Vice City hilarious; I'd want it in just so I could launch my corpse off a MAX unit.

No way they are large armored tanks. Do you think an A1 Abrams takes damage when it hits a squishy?

Now armor hits armor then yeah!

Hitting an Infiltrator shouldn't do anything to an ATV.

Hitting a MAX shouldn't do anything to a tank.

Beyond that, I'm open to it having varying levels of affect on the vehicle. For example, an ATV hitting a MAX should fuck them both up pretty bad, and an aircraft hitting even an Infiltrator when the aircraft is going full afterburner should probably do some damage to the aircraft. I like the idea of being able to roadkill with a Scythe, but I don't think it should necessarily do nothing to the aircraft.

Maybe a Scythe should be able to roadkill an Infiltrator, but has to be going at half of their normal speed to avoid taking damage.

Base it on weight, armor value, and speed. The faster you are going and the more you weigh, the more ramming damage you do to the infantry (and to other vehicles you ram into), but also the faster you go and the less armor you have, the more damage it does to your vehicle. So a high hitpoint tank doesn't even lose a single hitpoint, while a low hitpoint ATV could lose a lot of it's health, if not blow up instantly. Like if they hit a MAX at full speed, the MAX would still die, but so would the ATV.

That formula could be used across the board, for hitting infantry and ramming vehicles alike. For example, a fighter could afterburn into a MAX and do 5,000 damage, far more damage than the MAX can take, but the fighter would be destroyed as well, so it would be smarter to hit the MAX at a lower speed and suffer less ramming damage to your own aircraft. On the other hand, if the Fighter wanted to suicide into an enemy Galaxy, it could afterburn into the side of it causing 5,000 damage, all of which would transfer directly into the Galaxy, along with the explosion damage of your fighter blowing up.

Obviously it would have to be properly balanced so that a couple of fighters couldn't just kamikaze into a Galaxy to kill it easily, but if it took like 6 or 7 suicide fighters to take down a Galaxy, I think it would be pretty balanced.

Maybe there could be a separate damage equation for how much impact damage is transferred to vehicles when you ram them versus how much is transferred to infantry when you roadkill them.

Yeah, that was one of the few glaring issues that appeared to exist in Planetside2 after seeing the E3 vids/streams. Just how easy it was for a vehicle to die/suicide from terrain.

Here is hoping the devs make it so armored vehicles can bounce off terrain instead of instantly die. This is a game and there will be enough ways to die. Let the vehicles be a little forgiving and error on the side of not taking as much or any damage from scenery. We will be respawning plenty... so adding to that frustration would be bad imho.

Cheers!

I wouldnt expect anything but ATVs/Buggies to take damage even hitting a max.

That includes air vehicles, I think they would be a lot more sturdy than that. Should be able to run over even a max with minimal effect. Remember how hard it is to run people over in aircraft without hitting the ground anyway.
