DoT weapons in PS2?

I read somewhere that some VS weapons may cause damage over time, and with the inclusion of the flamethrower, it seems logical that the fuel would stick to someone and burn for a bit rather than it simply being a damage stream with a fire effect for display.
That being said, how do you feel about weapons that do damage over time? Miniature flamethrowers that can be mounted under full length weapons (rifles mostly I would imagine) and incendiary rounds could provide an interesting dynamic.

Though in my experience, no one likes a slow death that they can't do anything to prevent. Even if they would have been killed outright by a normal round, it's still not enjoyable to watch your HP tick away helplessly.

Close to pointless unless there was a practical way to remove the DOT. It isn't a good mechanic otherwise and the only reason the flamethrower should have it is for immersion.

DoT area effects like napalm are fine, it's just another way of zoning enemies. Though there should be a way to counter them.

DoT debuffs applied directly to players are pointless.

The Radiator from PS1 was a pretty useful weapon that was really underused. It was a wonderful weapon for area denial, mainly against entrenched defenders.

I've not seen any evidence of plasma grenades, aside from a possible weapon mount for the Lib, so... maybe?

Funny you should mention that weapon, because playing against it the other night i was thinking how it ruined combat. One person denying a squad of 30 is rediculous. Particularly when theyre doing it safely from the floor below.

I do generally love DOT on games though, and the statement about "its not fun seeing your life tick away" I see that as an advantage, a few seconds to get to an area where you might be rezed, or back to your squad.

I think it has a place, i think a molotov grenade like on Left 4 Dead would be ideal. Something you can throw down to keep the enemy out for a few seconds, or allow you to escape. And with grenades costing money, it wouldnt be over used.

Wish list - A VS sniper rifle that doesnt do huge damage in one hit, but does the same max damage as a NC rifle over time. So you can get a shot off, and giggle in cover while your target dies of DOT.

The Thumper (Grenade Launcher, with several different grenade types, including a Plasma Grenade that explodes and puts a DoT on everyone near for a few seconds, for thos who don't know) was pretty commonly used in PS1.

Good suppression weapon.

The Maelstorm wasn't a DoT weapon, but it had the same sort of 'indirect damage' characteristics, and you used it like you would a Plasma grenade.

A few Maelstorms would clear out a stairway in moments, that thing was disgusting.

I don't think we'll see them come back in the same way in PS2, but we shall see.

Give me beta, give me it now.

... and was hated by all.

But that had less to do with plasma dealing DoT, it was nerfed (after many years) simply because at the end of its 3 damage ticks, you'd have lost more than half your health even in Rexo. It was just too strong, and had too large an AoE radius.

Maelstrom is just pure bullshit to be honest, and I hope nothing like it is in PS2. The flamethrower has a pretty nasty dot, but it's range is rather short...

The thumper on the other hand was fun... it didn't do enough dmg to your health to break the game, as the plasma mostly burns your armor away. HE grenades didn't apply any dots, and EMP grenades didn't do any dmg at all.

I heard that the VS plasma based weapons will have small AOE due to it's viscosity.

DoT would be cool in some form because it adds to the dynamic of medics. Brings urgency to the battle giving medics something to address constantly.

The Comet Max did this (and I hope it transitions into PS2) and was one of my favorite weapons in the game, especially over the last few days with the bigger pops. It did some splash damage that also had DOT and was great for destroying enemy Max units as well as smaller vehicles like lightnings and skyguards.
