Add-On support?

Does anyone know if Planetside 2 will allow add-ons? It would be sweet to cook up a few if so. I know that if I could of done the same in PS1 I would of made a better platoon ui showing which armour a person was in under their name and if they had a repair gun and such. It just annoys me that there are so many parts of PS1 could of been improved on like the map requiring you to search through the drop down boxes whenever you want to do something or not being able to look at your map for spawn points when you're waiting to tap and so I really hope they allow add-ons for PS2 if not later in the game if it isn't already in at the moment.

There was some comment about allowing such things but I'm not sure if that was more in reference to making apps rather than add-ons.

I remember in one of the E3 vids on youtube that they said you could move ui stuff around and change the way health bars are positioned and actually had stations their set to different things like health bars on the top right or a circle near your crosshair. but as for support i don't remember if they said something about that

That's not an add-on, that's a hack. For add-ons see WoW's huge database on them. Most of them solve or macro logistical problems while the others offer better customisation of the UI which the user sees. WoW also has countermeasures to prevent people from using the add-on script to code hacks too, which would be implemented obviously in PS2 if they were to add add-on support.

There hasn't been any official word yet, but Hamma has stated:

As much as I would love and adore WoW-style add-ons in Planetside 2, I doubt it'll happen. They were an absolute nightmare for Blizzard and they'd be an absolute nightmare for SOE, but I suppose there's always that slim, slim chance they'll decide the nightmare's worth it for us add-on-lovers.

Planetside doesn't need addon's what functionality could you really need that isn't already there. Re-skinning the ui maybe I see no reason not to have cosmetic changes available. I would hate to see another World of Interfacecraft.

Seriously? The sheer amount of statistics we know it's going to track and you can't imagine what additional information people might want on screen? You don't know what kind of improvement people can bring to the mission system, squad organization, chat functionality, messaging functionality, map functionality etc. until you put it out there for them to play with.

You'd never have another World of Interfacecraft, simply due to the type of gameplay. The fights aren't as structured, nor are they as procedural. You'll never need the sort of huge mods that Atlas, Auctioneer and Carbonite consist of and you'll never be shunned from a group because your gearscore's too low.

I agree, I don't want addons for PS2. However, having it somewhat modifiable is always a good thing. I like what TERA did with their UI, everything could be specifically resized and moved. As in you choosed your UI element in a roll-down list, select the one you want to modify and modify its scale. You could also drag&drop-move everything without any effort. Very good!

Though I'm not an designer/developer so I wouldn't know how/if this would fit in a FPS-style game. However, that's how you want to do it if you're going to.

Lol. I hate when I misread titles.

Anyway I thought the devs said this can potentially happen perhaps.

BE: It brings in some investment on the player’s part because if they want the game to be a game they’d like to play, then it’s on them to let you guys know. Since you brought up the UI, are there any plans to enable players to create their own UI mods?

MH: We’ve talked so much about that, and it’s something we really definitely want to be able to do. I’m not sure if that’s going to be technically feasible when we ship, but it’s something we absolutely want to do in the future. One of the things that we’re gonna do is have a UI customization screen where you’re able to drag around all of the UI elements, be able to select where they’re going to be on the screen, scale them up and down, and those kinds of things.

That’s where we’ll probably be at ship, but post-launch, it’s always a possibility to allow people to put in their own customizable mods. We use Scale Farm for our UI, which is Flash, so anybody who knows how to make Flash movies is going to be able to put stuff that they can plug into the UI. We just need to actually make some of the API calls publicly available, and people can make their own UI mods.
