Not having been able to find a definitive answer yet if /tells to enemy empire factions will be in PS2 we can play around with the idea a bit in a thread I feel.
Firstly, to those that didn't play PS1, in it you could /tell any player, there was an /ignore feature but no /anon. Besides, putting ordinance down kinda announces you're about anyway. Now you maybe thinking all this lead to was empire spying, and there was some of that, but what it mostly lead to was the hate tell. Which evoked various responses in people, some liked having it in game, others didn't. I, personally, never sent them but did sometimes delight in getting them (never got that many being an average FPSer, but Suppressors/Radiating BFR pilots could annoy people nicely) and occasionally further winding up the person who sent it. On Werner we had a particularly infamous player for them by the name of "Cupid" we all liked to imagine them with high blood pressure and popping veins in their neck. The spying aspect of them in PS2 will be rather pointless anyway, should they make it in, with the apparent ease of "fourth-empiring" via second/third accounts. So er....few questions. If you're an old PS1'er. Did you send 'em? Did it bother you when you got 'em? If you're not an old PS1'er. How would you feel about them being in game in PS2? Would you send 'em? Would it bother you to get 'em? Last edited by Piper; 2012-08-01 at 05:55 AM. |

I mean, I have similar stories in almost every game I've played, that one was just readily available. |

Never sent a hate tell, only sent tells complimenting an enemy on thier skill/sneakyness etc etc
Recieved a fare few hate tells and always blanked the message.. no point aggrevating a situation makes for a bad gaming experiance and at the end of the day we are all playing for fun. |

Couple of things I forgot.
Hate tells were not always hatey (no such word). Sometimes they were actually good natured sportsmanship like tells. Which could lead to a positive outcome. Secondly, again, with the apparent ease of setting up more accounts, should they block /tell between empires those really wishing to send one could always just switch accounts and find you with an empire mate character before the /ignore lands. So blocking them could be moot anyway. |

Seriously. Harvesting tears is a profession. If people take time to send you smack know that, not only have you beaten them in game, irl you have broken their spirits.
Some folks get off on collecting those sorta things. Me? I feel bad for the person taking it so seriously. It's just a game, yo. Don't stress. I agree with therandomone, I think. I'd like the option for cross-team chat to be an option but, imo, off by default so the more fragile minded players who don't know where the button is aren't harassed by some pendejo's whole outfit just for having a good run. In EVE, everyone who straps on a gun knows (or learns right quick) that tears are precious cargo that only your bullets can find but in other games the mindset is not the same. I've seen enough players run off of games because their communities are total toilets and I'd like PS2 to not be one of them.

Certainly make it switchable for the fragile types.
I'm not a philosopher like most of the people on here but I do play PVP games for human interaction and calling the baddies childish names is part of that. Much rather call the other side wtfomgn00b or lux0r rather than my own team... Since my PC was connected to the net I've not played single player... |

I didn't get many hate tells in the original, and i never sent any, Wasn't a problem to me.
If they were also possible in ps2, I still wouldn't use em, and still wouldn't be bothered one way or another. In the words of the neutrals: -Ela |

i loved getting hate tells!
and i had a lot of fun, winding the senders up and forcing them to explode their boiling head but i sent only a few myself in all my ps1 years. mostly i sent respect tells, when i was killed in a very skillful or creative way. only very obvious cheaters with moving corpses and the like got some real hate tells from me so i want this feature in the game! there simply is no reason to forbit interempire tells. like the OP said, there are more than enough easy ways to spy, so it wouldn´t make any difference. (2nd free account, spy/map-apps, etc.)

Removing cross faction communication in PS2 would take a lot away from the community aspect of PS. What makes PS great is the ability for players to build a rep....whether that rep is built from your personality, your skills, or both, it's what makes combat interesting with enemies you KNOW.
