I'm pretty sure this is the right place to ask this.
Does anyone know any fun, hopefully somewhat tactically inclined, free-to-play FPS's currently on the market? I need something good to play until PS2, but considering how soon(™) the beta is, I don't really feel like spending any money on a game I won't play for that long. EDIT: This is totally off topic, but I have to mention it. You know the little random phrase generator right above the big words "Planetside Universe"? When I made this post it said "Sigbot will rape you.", and then when I went back to the main page it said "It won't hurt a bit!". I am now terrified of this site. Yeah, I checked them both out, but Tribes lags far too much even on minimum settings for me and BLR was a little too laggy to be fun, and the only times I played I was just spawn camped, which was pretty infuriating. I guess I'm looking for games that aren't on Steam, or maybe look bad but are actually good (and on Steam). I might have skipped over some of those.

Depends on what you mean be good...
There aren't any real good "free" FPSes out there. BLR is...ok I guess...it gets boring after awhile, its like space Call of Duty. Tribes is good if you can get the feel for it. Those are the only two free FPS games I would recommend. Last edited by KimJongLulz; 2012-08-02 at 10:42 PM. |

What about Team Fortress 2? Hardly a lick of tactical team play in it, but it's probably the one of the best paid and the best F2P game I've ever played (i bought it before it went F2P). It's easy to get into and the modding community is great. Bunch of different community-made gamemodes to try out.

I recommend Team Fortress 2. i just got it two weeks ago for free, i was thinking i wouldn't like it, but i played it.... and GOD it was a blast, especially the new CO-OP.
the game is almost like a parody of all modern FPSs while having the excellence of perfect classes that each have very awesome attributes and very clever mechanics put into the game, such as the engineer (i love the engineer). the game focuses heavily on teamwork, and, for once, THERE IS NO K/D RATIO. instead of people judging you on your K/D, the people judge you on your teamwork and if you do the objective or not. Also, the game is INSANELY balanced, to the point where all the things that are thought to be OP in other games (CoD *cough*) such as being able to go invisible, or wield a rocket launcher that is able to fire rapid shots, or fire a massive mini gun, or have a turret that has two twin chain guns and a host of rockets, it is... well, balanced. i mean, sure, you could put a fully upgraded turret in a corner that pwns anyone that comes near the intelligence (i did that yesterday, lol) , but then you could change class to spy and throw a EMP thing (forgot what it was called) at the turret, and then steal the intelligence. every attack has a counter attack. and i love being able to taunt people to death.... like the heavy's "BOOM! HA HA!" taunt with his hands where he just points is hand as a gun and shoots it, and if an enemy is in front of it, they go flying XD plus the game looks stunning, and i run it MAXED OUT 70 FPS on my piece of shit. i absolutely love the art-style, too. the game is bloody hilarious, and not only the best F2P FPS i have played so far, but one of the best FPSs ever made. get.it....and i didn't even spend a penny on the optional side-grades and cosmetic items.... TF2 is always fun, the coop just adds even more to it. Tribes Ascend can be fun if you can get into learning the movement and aiming. But once you do it's an incredibly rewarding game. Blacklight Retribution is also a good game if you are looking for a "CoDesque" experience.
Other then that I would not recommend all too many F2P FPS. The Battlefield Heroes and P4F games are "okay", but have some balance issues due to the ingame shop. But if you can look over that they can be fun too. |

people forget the good ole quakelive. it's free! no, not free2play, it's actually completely free. just like wolfenstein enemy territory. both old, but good free shooters.
actual free2play? there aren't many. team fortress 2, blacklight retribution (if you like cod), tribes ascend. in closed beta currently, loadout, firefall, defiance. these are third person shooters though. i can only recommened loadout from the third person shooter list though. ton of fun if you like super fast paced arcade action shooters. |

I've played a ton of free2play FPS games, and to be honest, a lot of them are basically the same. I had fun with them, but most didn't have much to stand out, other than Combat Arms. Some I've tried that are good are
Combat Arms Project Blackout Blackshot Alliance of Valiant Arms (aka AVA) Cross Fire Arctic Combat They're not very tactical. More of your fast paced fun and gun games, but entertaining, to say the least. I used to also play a third person shooter that was a lot of fun for a while, but I stopped playing when they started releasing a bunch of ridiculous weapons in the cash shop, which made it seem very pay2win, and that was MicroVolts. |

Yeah, a lot of free FPS's out there do seem to be really similar. I've got a new computer now, though, and PS2, so I don't really play any other games. I'm not sure why I didn't think of TF2, I'd been playing that game for about a year and burned out a few months before, but it is ridiculously fun. Pyropyropyro. I managed to get my whole team to go Pyro once, it was glorious. Still though, it's mostly PS2 for me now. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.
