John Smedley is answering questions on Twitter, many about system specs

https://twitter.com/j_smedley

@j_smedley How vital is having a lot of RAM for PS2? You've already stated that CPU is very important in the current builds?
@SteadiestShark right now it's super important but we are still optimizing. 4G minimum. 8 is great. Hopefully we get to 4 is great
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233557977624367104

@j_smedley Laptop i7 quad core with nvidia geforce gt 555m
@PedroLainho1 should be great
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233557217293529088

@Desbreko145 performance is the number 1 reason the game isn't done. It's a lot of work and it's hard work. We're getting there fast though
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233556784260997120

@j_smedley What system specs are we looking at to play at max settings?
@Charlie40640953 see my tweets about my own system. I recently upgraded to run at max.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233556431893299200

@j_smedley @_trowter For comparison purposes, what hardware are you running Smed?
@Temperance101 @_trowter i7 980 12 gig of ram.. 690.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233550475625115648
(Ouch.)

@_trowter On my machine I get 60fps in 2560 x 1600 with bursts as high as 100
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233549135649861632

@jmdelrio actually I want us to go crazy with a support page with our own benchmarks. We test on everything and track frame rates real time
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233554908475977728

@j_smedley What's the minimum graphics card specs required to play at this stage?
@Charlie40640953 in theory it's any shader model 3 capable card. We've tested a lot.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233554689927561216

Average fps in beta is 39. And improving. Low end machines need a lot of love though and we are working hard.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233547995851923456

@j_smedley i7-2670qm @ 2gz, 8gb RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6800M. Verdict?
@MaskedSkull_IV all good
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233559533379788800

@j_smedley What do you think about this Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU 1.86 GHz 1.86 GHz Installed memory: 4.00 GB Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5670
@Komarcek1 not good for ps2 right now honestly.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233552323828387840

@Whisper1135 I don't mean to imply anyone is a 'low end gamer' just want to be honest about ps2 needing CPU horsepower.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233551880557559808

@j_smedley @Temperance101 @_trowter Beastly, Ill be running i5 3570K, 8 GB ram, 670 FTW
@mahoning84 @temperance101 @_trowter decent.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233551386585989122

@j_smedley Will there be a Mac version some time in the future? If so, please for the love of god use OpenGL 3.2. Performance gains are huge
@lfc_7 yes there will be a Mac version. Hopefully not too long after launch
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233562230543769601

@j_smedley i7 2.8 Ghz here. (12GB, and GTX 460). Would OC'ing to 3.8Ghz yield a noticeable difference? And would the GTX 460 do well enough?
@D_Kjartan yes and borderline yes
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233561672411906048

@j_smedley Is it more GPU or CPU dependant? If ofc you are able to say
@GamerNick4242 more CPU but sometimes it gets gpu bound. Mostly CPU
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233564896565002242

@j_smedley will 6cpu core's be utilised and sli?
@stefman1231 yes
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233565767445131264

Just today we found a big performance issue and fixed it
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233482738135601152

@j_smedley Thats great, but what exactly is a low end machine?
@DannyJo81 I-5 dual core 8800
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233548436648108033
(i5 Dual Core? Does he mean i3?)

@j_smedley Any clue on Min specs?
@scufmark we aren't ready to finalize that. Thats precisely what we are working on.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233548858569945088

@j_smedley What would you say my computer is? i7 920 @ 2.67ghz, 6gb 1333 mhz ddr3 ram, nvidia gtx 560ti- and what fps do you think I'll get?
@SteadiestShark good computer. Not positive about your fps though. It will run just fine.
@j_smedley Ok, thanks. I should have probably added that I'll be playing in 1920x1080.
@SteadiestShark you'll be fine. Guess would be 40-60.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233549487342223360
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233550253570273280

@j_smedley is a geforce 9800GT supported? and if so is it the minimum or is it an okayish card to run the game?
@Combustiondj it should be if it's shader 3 which I think it is. It's at the lower end but should be ok. We are more CPU bound atm
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233550117842608128

@j_smedley low end machine is intel core 2 duo E84.. and nVidia GeForce 9500 GT ??
@mythzilla honestly yes. Even though that's a common machine it's at the lower end for us. We built it to last 10 years
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233550694928506880

@j_smedley i5 750 @ 3,8 GHz, 8GB RAM and HD5870 @ 1360x768 (old 32" TV ftw ) should run PS 2 decently I take it
@TavaFIN should be fine.

I'd say this is the most telling part (and consistent with other games of this caliber currently in beta). If you're limited to upgrading for PS2, get a CPU upgrade first.

Re: John Smedley is answering questions on Twitter, many about system specs

I'd be careful with these spec statements.
Will it use 6 cores? Yes...there's a pretty bug difference in performance between 6 of AMD's bulldozer cores and 6 (or even 4) Intel cores and a huge price difference between 4 and 6 of intel's cores. More importantly, does using 6 cores, over 4 or 2, give substantial benefit or is it more of a diminishing returns scenario?
So more cores might not necessarily be better or prudent. I would really play the wait-and-see game if you're upgrading specifically for PS2 and you're on a fairly restricted budget.

CPUvsGPU is another thing to be careful with. The best i7 in the world won't run high graphics with a GT240. Just like with a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 and a GTX690 low, med, and high settings will be progressively prettier but all be about equally unplayable.

So it seems CPU > GPU.

Thank goodness I got this new quad core for like 80 bucks...I'm gonna be pissed if I can't get into with Vista SP1, why I can't get SP2 is beyond me...oh well no worries I might just get a OS.

Plenty of 2 core i5 mobiles (Arrandale, Sandy Bridge & Ivy Bridge)

Also Clarkdale was a 2 core i5 gen1 for desktop (i5 6xx) and my guess is that is mostly what smed is referring too.

Quite interesting....I cant wait to test out max settings @ 1920x1080 on my machine...

no current games can really squeeze my system.

I7 950 3Ghz , 2x GTX 470 Super OC Edition SLi, 6GB DDR3 low latency, 64GB M4 SSD + 750GB

Have you tried Witcher 2? That game on Ultra, AA, and Uber Sampling enabled can do a number on cards even @ 1920x1080.

@Komarcek1 not good for ps2 right now honestly.
https://twitter.com/j_smedley/status/233552323828387840
This is what I'm running right now, except a 5870. It's a decent GPU but the CPU is pretty piss-poor, and I'd like to have more memory, particularly since it's just DDR2.

I can move over to a Athlon X2 64 5000+ but the performance gain is minimal. I've got a Phenom X3 but the mobo for it is dead. I might be able to get it to run in the AM2 board the X2 64 5000+ is using but honestly, it's time for a new rig.

Looks like I'll have to struggle through beta for a few months on the bare minimum rig while I buy and remodel a house. Once that's done, hopefully I can get some parts cheap on Black Friday.

I dunno man, you might get away with running on the lowest settings, but the game will look like shit. I suggest getting an AMD HD 6870...It's 6200 better than the 670. Same deal with the CPU - Get an AMD FX 6100, it's 2530 better.
