Buying a new Monitor for Planetside 2 - What the hell do i get?

I am in the market for a new monitor to play Planetside on ..

DO I GO:

A: Asus 27" VG278HE 120mhz-144mhz

B: Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 27" ISP

I have been reading into it for weeks and still not sure what the better option is.

Higher rez or fast mhz?

What you think???

Any other suggestions ?

btw i am upgrading from a DELL 24inch

Do you have the graphic card to power higher res? Do you have the graphic card to push over 60 constant frames to benefit from 120hz monitor? I can't seem to get a definite answer regarding 120hz and if you HAVE to be at a constant 60+, or if you still see a difference regardless. Seems to be many opinions on it.

I'd say stick with your Dell.

I'd go with higher rez over refresh rate. It's not a crt, refresh rate isn't such a big deal over 60 hz.

I am running a GTX580 and willing to go SLI if needed.

Spoke to a friend over lunch and he said you can always scale the rez down in game if it gets to intense for the PC to run, which is a great point but now im still torn whether the 120hz will make all the difference in smoothness.

I am almost leaning towards the DELL ISP now - if not maybe just hang on to the trusted 24inch dell i have had for years and wait till they actually create a ISP 120hz screen if that day ever arrives......

IPS makes a very good improvement in image quality as well as resolution, for the same cash the choice is easy.

And that screen is a new AH-ISP panel, said to be even better than than S-ISP or H-ISP

Do you do much else with this computer, or is it pretty much just used for PS2/other FPS games?

If SLi 580s and you'll spend the majority of the time on the computer playing fast-moving games (RTS won't be impacted much from 120hz, for example), then 120hz.

With just one 580, I imagine you'd need to make PS2 look worse or play at a lower resolution in order for the 120hz to be worth it, which just seems silly to me.

Vancha is right there. One part that sucks about 120Hz is you either need to shell out the cash for high end video cards for a high stable frame rate or really turn down the eye candy.

Load of crap.

Regardless of frame rate - a 120hz monitor will be a lot smoother than a 60hz one. It's a noticeable difference and a good one.

You do NOT need a constant 120+ fps to benefit from 120hz monitors.

@OP - If you're into FPS gaming - then grab your self a 120hz monitor. Either the BenQ XL2420T or the Asus. You will notice a major difference.

How is that a load of crap? You NEED higher FPS to see the difference. Pretty simple concept. You either need stronger graphics card or you will be turning down your setting in order to do same. I never stated you need 120+ FPS either to see the benefits. Never used one, but I hear people seeing the difference even at 80 FPS.

I've read through this thread top to bottom and I can't find anyone who actually said that...How odd.

With a 120hz monitor if you have a game that can not quite run at 60fps, it will still work nicely with vsync at 40fps as 40 is a factor of 120 (on a 60hz monitor, the vsync would force the framerate down to 30fps). And you can use that monitor for 3D as well.

I've heard some people say with the 120hz monitor even at 60 it feels smoother compared to a 60hz at the same frames. I've also heard the opposite many times.

A lot of people are big on the Dell IPS panels. I know low input is a big thing for people. Once again though, some people say you won't notice while others claim you will. You would probably be fine with an IPS.

That's the power of the "Edit" button vs the power of the "Quote" button
