I admit, I "purchased" guns with SC as I couldn't see myself stockpiling certs for what I wanted as the length of time would have been enormous.
On one hand Sony is purposely doing this to encourage people to buy stuff; you can't fault them for that. But on the other hand, the cert grind seems to be a tad on the high side. I think if they lowered things even by a tiny amount, that dreadful realization of having to stockpile certs would be tempered, while still not affecting buyers, as most of the buyers will probably buy things straight away anyways. They want you to spend money. We knew that and Im okay with that. You don't have to buy them all. Just buy 4 or 5 for your favourite classes/vehicles and its all good, it costs you only max. 5*3,5$=17,5$ if you bought your SC during a double sale. That's not much. You can even buy 10 weapons and pay 35$ and you are all set.
As long as they dont bring out a new super-overpowered weapon every 3 months that forces you to buy new stuff that's cool. I'm okay with that because I think everyone playing this game for a few months can pay the 35$ to do so. If you don't buy during double SC sales it's more expensive, but it's basically your own fault |

They've also got bundle packs and sales in-game where you can get weapons and the like for 50% off or more. It just takes time, and patience. They've gotta make money somehow.
If each weapon unlock was a couple hundred cert points, after a few months, the majority of their frequent playerbase would have the weapons unlocked and no reason to buy SC. |

I personally bought one weapon with SC. And I'm currently satisfied with it. SOE wants people to have a choice in what they spend in the game. You can spend less then the cost to buy a full priced box game with monthly subscription and pretty much deck out a class. Or you have the cheaper option to use XP boosters and spend some time playing to get stuff. Or, you can play for free but expect to spend more time getting what you need.
Perhaps some of the prices need to be brought down. Or the XP rate made higher. Perhaps SOE is working on these things right now alongside with the additional content to come. I wouldn't mind if SOE gave free players a few free certs to begin with. Use it to train them to use the shop. |

everything in the game is far to expensive imo, not just talking certs. it costs around $7 us to buy a gun. I understand that the games free to play and this is there source of income, but these prices are quite ridiculous.
also i have played 15 hours and have saved up about 200 certs. at this rate it will take 75 hours to have enough for a gun. maybe im just slow to earn them, but i didnt think i was doing too badly at the game... dont know about you, but i would find that quite off putting for new players... guy 1: "how long does it take to unlock a new gun?" guy 2: "about 75 hours of play time" guy 1: "your kidding right?" |

That does sound slightly ridiculous... What I'm not liking is the length between unlocks. You have to admit, the only reason people really like call of duty is you unlock something new quite often. It would be helpful for Planetside 2 to have a system where you get little unlocks/perks as you rank up and such.

1000 certs for a gun is a lot, but it's permanent.
I've unlocked three guns with certification points, 100, 100 and 250 so a total of 450 certs have been spent on new weapons alone. I don't regret any of these purchases; the cheaper guns are definitely not the bad ones. I've also unlocked two guns with SC: the Dalton lib cannon and the Lightning L100 Python HEAT. Both were completely worth it, especially the HEAT cannon. So much farm out of that. After you get going and start enjoying the game, the grind just kind of exists, not really doing anything to you because you're having a ton of fun. I'm considering just decking out my classes before I start buying new guns right now, except, maybe, for the Heavy Assault... that Gauss SAW is so bad... I'm having a hard time with the weapons grind too, but those 1000 cert point guns are not especially attractive when you consider the significantly cheaper options... especially the free ones! If you're just begging for a change, buy one of the cheaper ones or earn some badges in a vehicle. Both should make you happy enough to forget about how hopeless it is to buy those 1000 cert guns. You know, I hate when I do this, but I posted something without realizing how possible getting those 1,000 cert weapons is. If you play a good hour a day and get 40 certs in that hour, add it to the 1 cert per hour that you get whether you are online or not, you can get one of those 1,000 cert weapons in 15 days. And most likely you'll be doing more than 40 earned certs a day, which decreases the time even further.

^ True. And that's the best way to spend certs when you first start. Into a specific class or vehicle, depending on what you care about most, or a little of both. This fact should be made more apparent by the UI.
The cheapest option to help with this is XP boosters. You could get away getting XP boost for free by joining a squad that people are using squad XP boosts in. SOE does want people to pay for something, but also offer a way to do if for free. That's the intent there I think. Of course, with using XP boosters, you need to know how to obtain XP in the most efficient manner as well. For some, this isn't so easy since players do need some skill in order to get kills. But performing other actions and following others to support them with those actions is also viable while you learn. The devs need to help newer players a little more I think. Better training system. Throw them some free certs at first and show them what they should be doing with them. Last edited by Crator; 2012-11-27 at 12:21 AM. |

I agree, lots of stuff is much too expensive.I even spend money in the cash shop but I feel bad for all the people who aren't. That stuff is insane. Some of the non cash shop stuff is brutal also, like C4. I mean I guess I get that they need to encourage people to pay for the game, and how much stuff do people expect to own one week into the game? One week into PS1 I barely had anything. Gotta give people something to keep working for. But the prices could be chipped off a bit.

I do see where there is an issue with having to pay a lot for things that seem relatively baseline. I mean, C4 is like the only explosive really capable of destroying a vehicle that is available to most classes. Unless you're heavy assault, this is what you have. For such a baseline explosive, the price is quite ridiculous.

Honestly cert prices are way too high. 100 certs for a front grip? Realy?
In most games with subscription paying sub fee is enough to get a good progression rate without investing much time. In case of PS2 it's not. You pay 15 bucks a month and play like mad or you have to invest more real money in the game. It's confusing. Last edited by Maidere; 2012-11-28 at 06:09 PM. |
