Rank in the case of PS2 so far just denotes that you have been playing long enough to eclipse an exp. point shelf and obtain a flashy thing to pin on your shoulder. Yes a couple things are ranked locked as far as Certs go but it seems "rank" is just an Exp. thing.

It would be nice and actually let you know something about your teammates that could affect your decision making to see ranks for each class individually......that way you know by rank if the person has some class expertise or not.

For example:

If a guy is a Rank 26 Medic but a Rank 4 Engineer well...at least you know hoe expirianced they are at that particular class and you can make some assumptions about how that person can best help you, how well they are class equiped, or if they will fufill that role for your squad/team.
