Eh, I saw this happen many, many times in beta. Posted about it as well, among the many other issues relating to user-friendliness and confusing, not so obvious mechanics.
Not grenades mind you, but with rocket launchers. It's not derp. Can you honestly blame him? He's probably a new player who is at least trying. It's just something some people would assume they need to do "to destroy something." Wouldn't you if you didn't know any better at first? Blame Sony. |

For me, it's not throwing the grenade at the generator that made me cringe - you're right, and I remember in beta when you actually did have to shoot a generator to kill it. I don't blame the guy.
I DO want to smack everyone else for standing there (unless it was ALL of their first times destroying a generator), and I DO want to smack the guy that threw the grenade for throwing it in such close proximity to that squad of friendlies. Accidents happen. New players (or returning players from early beta) will not know all of the game's mechanics as the tutorial system is virtually non-existent. For me, however, I feel like any experienced video game player knows that when you are "overloading" something or "destroying" something like a generator, you know to get out of the way. They were just sitting there staring at it from five feet away. When you "set the charges" in any 007 video game since Golden Eye, did you stick around? I sure didn't.

the derp part of it was that people were standing around a generator that was about to explode. that made me actually laugh when they all died to the grenade, and then the generator finished them off. i shouldnt laugh at the misfortune of others, but alas, having seen and done the same many times both in beta, and in ps1 (Yes...)...

I wonder, do you actually get grief for that?
Which could easily be exploited for griefing purposes. Imagine a griefer outfit putting a full platoon right next to a rigged gen. *BOOM* 40 TK's = insta weapon lock? Last edited by Boomzor; 2013-01-06 at 06:29 AM. |

If you watch the kill log at the beginning of the video, there's actually 2 more grenades thrown up there to kill a whole bunch of friendlies.
There's a VS turret up there, which seems to indicate that a VS Engineer had set the gen to overload. A bunch of NC ran up to defend, someone threw a grenade thinking he was hiding behind the gen, and killed some people. Some medics ran forward for the revives, another grenade was thrown, more people died. Once again the medics ran forward, the grenade shown in the video was thrown, rinse, repeat, then the generator exploding repeated the process once more. The problem is that coming up the stairs, seeing everyone standing back, the assumption is that there is enemy resistance in the vicinity of the generator, so the first people think of is to throw a grenade up the stairs. Then when it blows a bunch of people up, the medics run forward and stop to rez for the free XP, and the process starts all over again. |
